Saint Lucia culinary team 2014 captures 12 awards

The St. Lucia team got a hero’s welcome on their return to the island after winning a silver medal overall at the Taste of the Caribbean Culinary Competition in Miami.

SLHTA – According to Walt Disney, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.”

This is indeed so for the 2014 Saint Lucia culinary team who performed exceptionally well at the Annual Taste of the Caribbean Competition. It was a tough competition according to participants, but it was also an opportunity to show the world that Saint Lucia deserves a place in the spotlight.

On Thursday, July 3, 2014, a group of delegates from the Ministry of Tourism, Heritage and Creative Industries, Saint Lucia Tourist Board and the Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA) hosted a welcome-back cocktail at Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa for the team upon their arrival.

At the cocktail reception, Executive Vice President of the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, Noorani Azeez, took the opportunity to congratulate the team on their success.

“I want to thank you profoundly for setting a fantastic stage for us to pursue as we lift the standards of culinary arts in Saint Lucia,” he said.

Azeez also expressed his gratitude to Zina Haynes for working tirelessly to ensure that the team was ready for the competition.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Donavan Williams, also applauded the team on their achievement.

“It’s a really good sign when you can demonstrate tangibly that your abilities can carry this expectation to provide us with the product that we have today. And the fact that you won so many awards, tells me not only that you are talented but that you also committed and that you can achieve,” Williams said.

He further indicated that food and beverage plays a huge role in the product that Saint Lucia has to offer.

  1. Your reporter writes these stories in a vacuum. Which country won the overall title at the event? They were over a dozen countries there, not so? Which country won gold medals at the events in which St. Lucia won only silver or bronze. St. Lucia from reading won one single gold medal but the story gives the impression they walked away with the lion share of medals. I'm just saying you have to tell how the competition did to put St. Lucia's performance into perspective. Your reporter should learn the basics of news writing before submitting nonsensical stories that are seen here too often,
