Pool C of the men’s beach volleyball tournament at the XVIII Pan Am Games in Toronto, Ontario, Canada was never going to be easy.
Saint Lucia’s Julian Bissette and Joseph Clercent were drawn against giants of the game, Argentina, the USA and Cuba at the Chevrolet Beach Volleyball Centre.
On Monday, although they gave the Americans a good run, the Saint Lucian boys eventualy succumbed. On Tuesday, it was more of the same against Argentina, losing 17-21, 17-21 to Ian Mehamed and Nicolas Capogrosso.
“It was a complicated game that we didn’t expect. We thought we were going to handle it better but it was difficult during the first set. We were nervous but we never lost our calm and continued playing until we won” said Mehamed.
It gets darker before the dawn for Saint Lucia. On Thursday, Joe and Julian face Cuba, who have beaten both Argentina and the USA so far.
Saint Lucia are actually playing well, given the level of their opposition. USA are the top seed in the NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) region. Cuba and Argentina are top five seeds in their respective regions.
Assuming Saint Lucia loses their group finale to Cuba, they will then play in the ‘classification’ rounds, more than likely starting against Aruba.
The other likely teams in that round would include Aruba, , either Trinidad and Tobago or El Salvador, and either Nicaragua or Guatemala.
Brazil, Cuba and Mexico remain undefeated. Saint Lucia, along with Nicaragua, Guatemala, Venezuela, Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador are all yet to secure a win.
