The Police came out blazing on all fronts last night scoring 3 treys in the first quarter to jump out to the early lead on an unsuspecting Vintage Basketball crew.
Starting the barrage was Officier Erwin Tertullien, who scored a total of 4 treys on the night, followed by officers Kurlinus Augustin and Calius Dantes in quick succession, knocking Vintage back on its heels, 20-12 by the end of the first.
From then on it was a fight to gain every point for Vintage Basketball, the Police giving nothing easy.
Vintage made strides in the second quarter behind youngster Dru Serieux’s 7 points to win the quarter 15-12, but were still behind by 5 points at halftime, 32-27.
The 3rd quarter was even tighter than the 2nd, Erwin Tertulien barely able to get free to swish two more treys, supported by Dantes who added 4 points.
For Vintage Basketball Alwyn Harris was all over the boards, grabbing 8 rebounds and scoring 4 points. That with a united effort by the rest of the team kept scores close by the end of the period 43-38.
In the 4th Police jumped out ahead again behind scores by Kurlinus Augustin and Erwin Tertullien, but successive treys by Vintage guards Kernan Joseph and Utah Alexander brought Vintage within 3 points with just over two minutes remaining.
Officer Calius Dantes, blocked on a drive to the hoop, was able to recover and make the putback to keep his team up 49-44.
A failed offensive trip by Vintage gave Dantes the ball again and he was fouled on another move to the basket. He scored 1 of 2 attempts, 50-44 with just over 1 minute remaining.
Kernan Joseph again got free behind the arc to drop another trey, bringing his club within 3 with 43 seconds left.
A quick foul put Erwin Tertullien at the line where he scored 1 of 2, putting his club up by 4 points.
With less than 30 seconds remaining Vintage Basketball needed a basket and none was more timely than a trey from the right corner by Dru Serieux with 13 seconds remaining, score 50-51.
Another quick foul put officer Kurlinus Augustin at the line where he missed on the first attempt.
The second attempt by Officer Augustin clanged off the rim again and after a brief skirmish Vintage finally had the ball with less than 10 seconds remaining.
But the hard-nosed, unyielding defense posed by the Police all night gave little room for error, and a poor decision by the Vintage guard resulted in a critical steal by the Police to end the game.
With the win RSLPF advances in the winner’s bracket and go on to Micoud where they will face the winner of tomorrow’s game 3.
Vintage Basketball are now relegated to the Loser’s Bracket where they await the loser of game 3.
