Results in KFC Commercial Basketball League, Sept. 19-20

Goddard group is now through to the quarterfinals and sit at the top of Group B after they defeated Inland Revenue in game 1 of Friday’s double header in the KFC Commercial Basketball League 2014.

Both teams tied with a 2-1 record going into the game and badly needing a win to put them through to the quarterfinals. An amazing showdown ensued at the indoor facility with both teams leaving it all on the court and at the end requiring an extra 5 minutes after regulation, to gift CBL 2014 with its first overtime game much to the satisfaction of the fans in attendance.

Goddard group forced the overtime with .8secs to go in the game in thrilling fashion when Andre Louison hit a 3-point field goal as time expired. Goddard built on that momentum going into the extra minutes and put the game beyond Inland Revenue as they fully controlled the overtime scoring 15 points and limiting their opponents to only 3 and win with a final score of 86 – 74.

KFC Player of the game Andre Louison had an impressive scoring game, contributing to over 62% of Goddard’s 86pts and finished with figures of 54pts, 11rebs and 7 steals. Ali Quinlan also chipped in with 20pts and 6 assists in the win. Keegan Preville had another huge double double of 30pts and 20rebs. And Ron Dumurville had 25pts and 8rebs in the loss for Inland Revenue. With the loss, Inland Revenue moves to a 2-2 record at the end of the group stage and have failed to progress into the quarterfinals.

In game 2 on Friday, St. Lucia Fire Service (1-1) was locked into a close encounter with Sandals Trailblazers (1-2) early in the first half. Another desperation game for both teams especially Sandals who needed a win to improve their chance of a place in the quarterfinals. They kept it close at the end of the first half down by only 3 points, Fire Service leading 26 – 23.

In the 3rd though it was all Los Fuegos, raising the heat and defensive intensity to take full control of the 3rd quarter 18 – 9 to lead by a dozen to start the 4th. A spirited fight back for Sandals Trailblazers late was not enough to secure them the much needed win, Fire Service winning in the end 58 – 50. The win improves Fire Service to 2-1 in Group A and need a win in their last group stage game to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Marcian Calderon was named the KFC player of the game for Fire Service with 19pts and 17rebs. Owen Cazaubon also added 13pts and 10rebs of his own. In their loss, Simeon Medard had 13pts and 11rebs and Miguel Chicot added 11pts and 10rebs for the Trailblazers.

On Saturday, two more games with quarterfinal implications continued with Scotia Bank (1-2) vs. Insurance All Stars (0-3) tipping off the night’s doubleheader. Scotia needed a win over Insurance All Stars to keep their chances of qualification alive in Group C with both Media Association and Sandals High Risers already qualified automatically as 1 and 2 respectively.

Scotia emerged winners in that contest 55 – 43 on the backs of their dynamic duo of Shamoir JnBaptiste and Ron Edwards finishing with 26pts and 20pts respectively, earning them joint KFC player of the game. With the win, Scotia has successfully made it to the quarterfinal knockout stage of the tournament on a better point spread margin. Ian Lesmond and Nigel Francis for Insurance All Stars both finished with 13pts in their loss.

Game 2 of the evening featured a Group A clash between defending champions RSLPF Police (2-1) and group leaders Renwick & Co (3-0). Renwick kept their unbeaten streak alive in the group stages moving to a perfect t 4-0 record to go into the quarterfinals winning 59 – 55 over Police. Congratulations to Renwick for topping Group A without a single defeat in the group stages. With the loss, Police sits in second position in the group with Fire Service (2-1) having one game in hand which they will play this coming Wednesday.

KFC Player of the game for Renwick Joel Polius had a monster game on both the offensive and defensive end with 25pts, 27rebs and 7 steals. Larry Shepherd also added 16pts and 11rebs in the win. For Police, Amil Octave led the scoring with 13pts and 6rebs in their 2nd loss in the group stages of CBL 2014.

Group stage games will conclude this Wednesday 24th September with Digicel 4G vs. LeSport at 6pm followed by St. Lucia Fire Service vs. ECFH at 8pm. Quarterfinal matchups will be made public in Thursday’s release.
