PRESS RELEASE – The knockout quarterfinals of the KFC Commercial Basketball League tipped off on Friday evening with a huge doubleheader.
First, Renwick and Company with a perfect 4-0 record from Group A in the group stages faced the 2nd seed from Group B The Goddard Group.
An already tough task for Goddard from the start was compounded when they lost their 2nd leading scorer Ali Quinlan in the tournament through illness.
And early on it seemed an uphill battle for Goddard with Renwick cruising through the game at their own pace leading by as much as 7 points and controlling the first 3 quarters with a narrow 4-point lead to start the 4th.
Goddard to their credit stayed within touching distance of Renwick and that proved the telling factor as they totally dominated the 4th, unsettling Renwick offensively and converting on their chances on the other end to win the quarter 15 – 6 and pull off the upset to win the game 47 – 42.
KFC Player of the Game Dillan Biscette was big in the 4th quarter for Goddard finishing with 13pts and 12rebs.
Andre Louison led all scorers for Goddard with 21pts and 14rebs. For Renwick & Company, Joel Polius had a huge double-double of 22pts and 29rebs in Renwick’s exit to CBL 2014.
In the 2nd quarterfinal of the evening, Digicel 4G also put their perfect record in the tournament against last year’s finalist St. Lucia Fire Service.
Fire Service led by Marcian Calderon jumped out the blocks early in that game to lead by double digits at the half 29 – 16.
Fire Service seemed on a mission to get back to the finals and the win never looked in doubt as their experience, size and height advantage got them easily past Digicel 4G at the end 55 – 39.
Jerry Charles for Fire Service was named the KFC Player of the game with 16pts and 6 steals. Marcian Calderon led the scoring for Fire Service with 19pts and 6rebs.
Neil Verdant was the lone player in double figures for Digicel 4G with 15pts and 3rebs as they just like Renwick have been knocked out of the tournament.
On Saturday, two other quarterfinal matchups took centre court first with another undefeated team in the group stages Media Ballers, going up against defending champions Police.
Media who have started this year’s tournament 4-0, were seeking another win to see them into the final four.
Police with their own aspirations of title repeat, needed this win to get them one step closer to the finals.
Media looked the part early and controlled the game through their man in the middle Elijah Williams scoring or assisting on a number of early Media’s possessions.
They took an early double digit lead to end the half 32 – 19 and left Police shell shocked while thinking of a way to get back in the game in the 2nd half.
Police seemed a different team in the 3rd quarter as they introduced a 1-3-1 defensive press to force a number of turnovers from Media which Police converted to take the lead at the end of the 3rd 42 – 40.
Police built on that lead in the 4th leading by as many as 6 points and seemed poised to pull off the comeback victory.
But Media had other plans of their own and with about 4 mins left in the game Arthur Lisson carried his team en route to his 35pts career high brought Media back into the game and retake the lead.
A lead they will not relinquish this time as they eliminated the defending champions 62 – 59 and ensured that CBL 2014 will have a new champion in the process.
KFC Player of the game Arthur Lisson had a huge scoring night but was also prolific on the boards finishing with figures of 35pts and 17rebs.
Elijah Williams also finished with 10pts and 11rebs for Media. Shervon Matthew finished with 16pts and 7rebs for Police in their loss.
Game 2 of the evening between Sandals High Risers and Scotia Bank featured two teams that had already met in the group stages with Sandals on that occasion getting the better over Scotia.
There wasn’t to be a repeat of that outcome though as Scotia bank avenge that early season loss to win 64 – 55.
With their usual crowd support being the 6th player on the court and the performances of their scoring duo of Shamoir Jn Baptiste and Ron Edward contributing 45 of Scotia’s 64 points.
KFC Player of the game Shamoir finished with 35points, 9rebs and 5 steals. Ron Edward also chipped in with 10pts and 6 steals in their win.
For Sandals, Cassim James had 23pts and 10rebs. Joel Etienne also added 17pts and 5rebs for Sandals High Risers.
With the results above, the semi finals teams are now Goddard Group, St. Lucia Fire Service, Media Ballerz and Scotia Bank.

Scotia Bank vs. Goddard Group – Wednesday 1st, October at 7pm
