Below is a statement from the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) which has been distributed to all media houses
The Saint Lucia Labour Party has noted the deafening silence of the UWP following the conviction of Richard Frederick by Magistrate Velon John for driving without due care and attention.
The conviction arose out of a vehicular accident sometime last year. On March 6, 2013, Frederick was found guilty by Magistrate Velon John and fined $2,000 to be paid within fifteen days. His driver’s license was also suspended for 40 days.
This latest conviction follows the award of several thousand dollars by the Court Of Appeal against Frederick for wrongfully discharging a firearm into the home of the Joseph family at Corinth a few years ago. So convincing was the decision of the Court of Appeal that the Privy Council refused to entertain an appeal from Frederick.
Many Saint Lucians will also remember the incident involving his unlawful parking of his vehicle on Jeremie Street in 2012. And of course a cloud of suspicion remains over the maneuverings employed by him and Prime Minister King to abort legal proceedings against him by customs regarding alleged under-invoicing of a vehicle.
Then in 2011, Fredericks character and credibility came under further scrutiny when the United States revoked his visa to travel to the United States. To date, the former Prime Minister and now the Leader of the Opposition, Hon Stephenson King, has not disclosed to the public the reason for the revocation of Frederick’s visa.
This latest incident, once again, raises the question whether Richard Frederick is a fit and proper person to be a parliamentarian. The Saint Lucia Labour party calls on Stephenson King to indicate whether, if re-elected as leader of the UWP at the much postponed convention, he would continue with Richard Frederick as a candidate of the UWP.
The Saint Lucia Labour Party warns Stephenson King that if he does not take action against Richard Frederick, he will face further embarrassment for the conduct of Richard Frederick.
The conduct of Frederick is not only an embarrassment for the right-thinking supporters of the UWP but for all Saint Lucians.
