Melissa “Q-Pid” Moses has become the first artiste in Saint Lucia’s history to be selected for the finals of the Groovy, Power and Calypso Finals competitions.

A member of NG Upsurge and Take Over Tent, on Sunday, June 30 she qualified for her first Calypso Monarch finals competing with the two songs “Woman” and “The Dream.”

The Calypso Final nod came after she had qualified for the Groovy Soca Finals with “Chipping” and the Power Soca Monarch competition with “Cross Over”. She qualified impressively in both contests which were held on Thursday, June 27 and Friday, June 28, respectively.

Q-Pid has long been a staple on the Saint Lucian soca scene; this year she is celebrating a decade of entertaining fans with such hits as “Water” (2006) “Take It Like A Man” (2008) “I Do” (2010) and “Just Go”- the 2009 song that garnered her second place in that year’s Groovy Soca Monarch competition.

Signed to the Stratosphere Muzic label, led by her long-time producer Courtney “Curty” Louis in 2012, Q-Pid and her management team took the strategic decision to diversify her portfolio, first as a host of the 2013 Piton Soca Starz competition, and then entering the calypso competition she has long expressed interest in.

It was a move that paid off in a season that saw her focusing more on her craft, not performing at as many shows as she had in previous years.

Q-Pid now looks ahead to the three finals which will be held one day apart at the Beausejour Cricket Grounds – Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14.

“I am very happy I was successful in all the competitions but there is also a fair bit of pressure as well. I just want to continue to do my best and give the fans who have long supported me and the new ones I gained in the calypso arena the best account of all the songs,” she says.

Q-Pid will be accompanied in the Groovy Finals by Stratosphere Muzic label mates Mongstar, D’Sean and Jay Budz, as well as Ricky T who will perform the Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic song, “40 Days and 40 Nights.” In the Power Soca finals she will once again be joined by Mongstar, D’Sean and Ricky T as well as Ambi and Kakal.

This is the third consecutive year Dutch Productions/Stratosphere Muzic has received the most finalists in the Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions with five in the Groovy and six in the Power.

  1. I am a very proud Lucian, trust me, but St. Lucia lacks good performers. I live abroad and I have always been very disappointed when I attend concerts featuring St. Lucian artiste. Invader is the only one who I can truly say is a well rounded performer, but he is getting older and the younger guys need to step up. They fall short and can not really compete outside of St. Lucia.

  2. Propaganda. False Information! Minel was the first to do all three in a single year. How quickly we forget. Some of us just too fast! This is an embarassment.
