A strategic plan of action towards the achievement of promoting investment in housing, enabling adequate growth, maintenance and improvement of the island’s housing stock were the main topics of discussion as government officials met, Wednesday August 29th 2012.
Minister for Physical Development, Housing and Urban Renewal, Honourable Stanley Felix expressed the need to provide affordable housing in the country, in an effort to alleviate poverty and bring about infrastructural development.
“ The cost of developing land and providing housing in this country is way too expensive. It is my Ministry’s view, it is also the view of the National Housing Corporation that it is in fact, way too expensive to meet the demands of affordable housing in this country.”
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Development, Housing and Urban Renewal, Esther Brathwaite noted that the concept of multi-family housing can be considered as the proposed solution to the land shortages, population growth, affordability and vulnerability factors.
“This government is about increasing the supply of affordable land and housing and acquiring lands for low and middle income owners. It is therefore our mandate to increase the supply of affordable land and make adequate housing available to those in need. We see multi-family housing as a viable alternative for low cost housing that government can invest in.”
Hon. Stanley Felix urged the public to consider building a mutual partnership with the government as the policy of multi-family housing is presented.
