Prime Minister salutes OPEC fund

PRESS RELEASE – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, has lauded the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) for the way it handled Saint Lucia’s application for a loan to expand the Choc to Gros Islet Highway.

According to the Prime Minister, Saint Lucia was handled with great consideration throughout the application process. In his remarks during the signing ceremony held in Vienna on June 29, 2015, Dr. Anthony said,

“We are a small state with a population of 170,000 persons.  It is true that we are independent and sovereign.  It is also true that all states recognize the protocol that applies to such matters, be they rules, conventions and practices.  I merely wish to emphasize that you have handled my small state with utmost civility, respect and sensitivity.  I thank you immeasurably.  It means a lot to us, far more than you think or recognize.”

According to the Prime Minister, this will augur well for future interactions between OFID and Saint Lucia.

“We consider the OPEC Fund to be a reliable development partner and hope that through the partnership we can see the implementation of many more projects with significant developmental impact for Saint Lucia.  We particularly appreciate the fact that though we are a micro state, OFID treats us with respect, civility and utmost sensitivity.”

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) conducted a Joint Appraisal Mission in Saint Lucia, in October 2014. During that period meetings were held with the technical Staff of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Port Services and Transport, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs and Social Security and other relevant agencies.
