Prime Minister Kenny Anthony has expressed excitement at news that a St. Lucian has been given a trial with Arsenal FC.

Seventeen-year-old Caniggia Ginola Elva, currently living in Calgary, Canada, is in London to try out for Arsenal. He is a striker with the , Calgary Southwest United of Canada.

Prime minister Anthony said he is excited about the possibilities this opportunity will present for Elva.

“I am proud of his accomplishments thus far. His skill and hard work is taking him places no other Saint Lucian has gone and has gained him recognition worldwide,” he said.

He has assured the country that government will continue to monitor Elva’s progress.

“Caniggia comes from a very accomplished football background. Arguably, one of the best footballers Saint Lucia has ever produced is Titus “TiTi” Elva from Vieux-Fort. Titi, who is Caniggia’s father, represented Saint Lucia for many years and also played club football in Trinidad and Tobago… I applaud and congratulate his support system, particularly his father, Titus Elva and his uncle Oliver Elva, who is his guardian,” Anthony stated.

  1. Jealousy is a crime. Whether he represents Canada or St.Lucia he is still a born St.Lucian and he is not the kind of child who will forget his roots. Proud of you Caniggia. Your Dad, uncle and all of the Elva family is proud of you especially the people of Vieux-Fort. For Gween whatever, be quiet at least he got the opportunity in Canada. Be proud regardless. Support is all he needs. He is young and doing something of himself so dont hurt the young man's feelings and put him in a position to choose. If you have a problem why don't your ass get up and go represent Canada. If you cannot go that far I suggest you shut your ***! CASE CLOSED!!!

  2. Gween peenha. please if you cant say anything positive about this young man please shut your pie hold. We as Lucians suppose to suport our youths that are doing something good with their lives and all u are doing is putting him down. He is not Pele or Marodona but he is ours. A good son from our island. St.Lucia. choops

    • He is not yours anymore- He belongs to Canada now. He is representing them now and might as well be - He is questionably Canadian.

Who's to say he may not become Pele or Mara? The young man is at the starting line and has got a BIG opportunity. Canadian, British, wherever, he was still born on the soil of the Fair Helen. I don't need a penny from him but i would be super overjoyed if this young man can stack piles of dosh and look after himself and his Lucian family.

Patriotism isn't just wearing your country's uniform, it is also supporting yours and he may be an immigrant but by birth he will ALWAYS be St Lucian and ALWAYS be one of us.

Gwen, you yourself sir are no patriot so don't put the young man down for spreading his wings and trying to fly. Mash, vieux chien senti. You try speak like an english man, I hope the English take you and keep you far away from Lucia with your dirty mouth scumbag.

      • You have truly shown what you are made up of with your feculent and aischrolatreia remark. You are the cult of the obscene. You worship filth and obscenity - You are a pitiful human being with very little humanity.

I have not said anything which merits the type of profanity you have thrown at me. Instead of saluting someone who does not give a toss about you,why don't you do something which will bring you some much needed self- praise and admiration?

St Lucia is playing tonight and could do with this young chap's presence in the squad. Pick up the phone and give his parents a call or better still call his agent and tell them you would like to see him play for his country-- Yes his country St Lucia and not Canada where he is an immigrant. If you really care about him then perhaps you should be doing this.

This boy and his family does know the meaning of patriotism.. He will never become a Pele or Maradona. He ain't nothing special. My best advice to him right now is to concentrate on his studies just in case he does not make it in football. At least he will have something to fall back on.Never put all your eggs in one basket.

See people like you will not think of that cause you are too narrow minded and twisted. The world does not revolve around football and footballers alone. There is a big world out there with endless other things going on in it.You are simply thinking of the glory and adulation which may come... But you should create your own glory and self-importance ole chap... Let the young man get on with it.

Your bawdry comments is just the type that defines a scumbag like you.It isn't helping this young man's cause in any positive way whatsover... You may well be a family member or friend who is waiting to start milking the cash cow this boy will become should he ever make it in football.. Why don't you and his poor excuse of a family go make your own money? Leave him alone and let him find his way without all the meddling.

Remember the saying he who lives in glass houses should NOT be throwing stones or mud for that matter... Think about it sir.

With respect Gwen, you are an asshole. You sound like a bitter failure and loser. If the guy is following his dreams who the hell are you to say he will never make it? If this football journey however, is not his dream then I would agree with you to let him be but if that's what he wants then congrats to him and he should seize every opportunity to go for it.

"See people like you will not think of that cause you are too narrow minded and twisted. The world does not revolve around football and footballers alone." Jackass, I know nothing about football. All I know is this article is about a young man given a chance to pursue a sport he loves as a career, I big him up. There's nothing wrong in showing your support for a fellow Lucian, it has nothing to do with glory to come. YOU are the one thinking about it and probably depsise the fact that it isn't you with such and opportunity maybe. If you can't support the man why don't you just shut the hell up and move along you selfish twat.

I am a family member and a friend through citizenship. I consider him my brother although I have no idea who he is and know no more than what I read on here about him. Whatever money he makes from this has nothing to do with me. I achieve my goals, the same way I would spur him on to achieve his and not to chase money like a sad little dried up gwen peemah like yourself.

          (1)(0)
          • You are most certainly referring to yourself there mate in your introduction. You are bitter and twisted and have no class....Go make yourself useful you indolent prat. Yes you are a prat with nothing to do.

Get a life! You most certainly need one. If anything you are the loser and the failure. Why do you come on here to shoot off your rhetoric? You are one cantankerous scumbag. The more you open your potty gob the more transparent you are becoming with your bile and irascible comments.

It's pitiful folks like you that is responsible to bringing a country like St Lucia down with your ill-natured and dyspeptic behaviour.

I add flavour with the "gwen Peemah" and it's what most people like. They want to hear both sides of the argument. Your lopsided and tetchy crap reveals the kind of man you are.. A sad lonely, pathetic, pettish, waspish clown whose moral imperatives is at stake. You have no morals at all. No scrupples.

Stop pretending that you care about this boy. It's people like you that will be casting aspersions about him later on when he fails to make the mark or step up to the plate. Yes it's hypocrites like you.
With friends like you I don't think anyone needs enemies... You are doing just fine in your line of thinking...This young man and his family can do without you and your pitiable comments... Get a life mate!!!!

Balls, go get a well needed wash!! Please don't use the people's article for your bully's playground. Your arrogance disgusts the life out of every reader on this page including yourself. Your responses serve to belittle people just to make yourself feel like a higher man/woman which only proves the total opposite.

I totally agree with adding flavour and another side to the story but not in such a way as to disrespect the subject and his family. You are the one who lacks class. I have no reason to pretend anything, the young man may not even read this article. I hope you are as successful in other aspects of your life as you have proven to be a disgusting faceless internet troll with little respect for your own people.

For me, this discussion is now closed, because I've got a life; A successful one which affords me the flexibility, control and time to come on here and stand up for what's right and defend against insignificants like you. I am sure many others here will support me in saying you are the BIGGEST LOSER to post on here and I have no interest in any response you post to this. Take your negativity elsewhere you brit wannabe.

            Again I say it......MASH!!

  4. @Gwen Peemah.....You should name yourself seemea gwen as in BS. Who the hell are you to tell the young man who to play for, and what's with that boy mentality? He's a young man not a boy to you stop putting him down that's rude. Thank God he migrated to Canada if not he would sitting in Vieux-Fort the Prime Minister constituency scratching and sniffing his ass because ain't nothing going down there for the younger generation. There are lots of talented young people back home but where is the hope? Where can they start? Look at the soccer fields they are all crying for help, where are the after school programs from Castries to all other Towns and Villages and I can go on and on. Get outside and enjoy life and stop being part of the 4king problem since you are not being part of any solution so STHU you green eye Monster.

Go do big things and come back home on vacation only can that small island is too currupt a stadium is still hospital that y sports is at it's all time low. I can't wait to pay my $$$$$ 2 c u in the EPL.

  6. Perhaps the prime minister should persuade this Arsenal wannabe to play for St Lucia in the upcoming game against Jamaica on Wednesday. Lets see what he is made of. Your country needs you. The country where you were born and bred before you migrated to Canada as an immigrant.

St Lucia is going to play against the Reggae Boys this week and this could be an opportunity for you to showcase your talent. It's a friendly and FIFA will not mind one bit if you play in this friendly and decide to play for Canada where you currently reside later on.

St Lucia need to put in their best performance against Jamaica who are formidable opponents and they could do with all the help they can get.Why is he showing off to the media world about coming from St Lucia? You need to play for your country if you are truly worth your salt.

I think this kid is grossly over-rated. His opportunistic parents are just waiting in the wings to milk it for all it's worth. His father is an under-achiever in football so he is banking on his son making it so he can start throwing his weight around - much the same way Serena and Venus's dad are doing.

They need to let the boy find his way around. Stop pushing the kid just so you lot can boast to the world and milk every penny he gets should he make it professionally. Arsenal has loads of talented kids and this young man is nothing special.

Show what you are made of and represent your country on Wednesday.St Lucia needs you more than Canada does. There are lots of talented players in St Lucia that is not getting a mention - Prime Minister please concentrate on getting the economy right and helping to create jobs for the people instead of wasting time and energy on someone who will not give a toss about you or St Lucia should he ever make it in football.

Posing with Arsene wenger is no big deal. Anyone can ask the Arsenal manager for a photo opportunity.
Give The Lucian FA a call and come play on wednesday. St Lucia V Jamaica.

I THINK YOU ARE ONE BITTER ST LUCIAN WHO IS JUST JEALOUS.

      (1)(0)
      • If anything I think You are referring to yourself there.. Jealous of what? I have better things to occupy my life with than to sing praises of an untried and untested soccer wannabe.

There is nothing about this boy to be jealous of. He is no Pele or Maradona and never will be. He is just an average Joe trying to make it in football. There are thousands like him on the books of clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona, Celtic and Chelsea. Only a few will make it.

It is not about talent alone. There are other qualities that comes into play if one is going make it in the football world. From what I have read and heard there is nothing special about this kid.

You people have nothing better to do other than to wait for someone to create a sensation somewhere and for you lot to come crawling on their backs. That is what is wrong with the Caribbean. People who wait for others to do things and for them to come out and pretend they care about them.
If anything you the bitter one with your narrow minded view of the world around you.

One of the main reasons why a lot of Lucians don't make it in football is because of people like you and the average Lucian who expect so much when they themselves did not do much.

Why don't you do something that will make your country proud? Instead of according tributes to a boy who has given up on his original nationality - A boy who don't give two hoots about people like you. You need to get a life.. Only time will tell. You will thank me in the future for telling it like it is.

I am not star struck and never will be. I would rather be singing the praises of the Farmers and fishermen who keep the country going than some wannabe who has no cause to live bigger than himself. It is time You Lucians stop singing the praises of others and sing yours instead...What have you done for St Lucia?
Will he represent St Lucia against Jamaica on Wednesday? I doubt it very much.. and you call yourself the Daughter Of Helen?

        (0)(1)
        • wow wow Gwen peemah SMFH JEALOUSY IS A CRIME i just wish i knew who you are...JEALOUS JEALOUS ...waste man dats what u are

          (1)(0)
    • You want him to represent St.Lucia against Jamaica but yet still you are saying he has no talent.Maybe you should think first before writing.Empty vessels make the most noise.

      (1)(0)
      • I never said he didn't have talent. I said he is not all that meaning there is some talent but you lot need to stop making him out to be the next Zidane,Maradona or Henry.

Let's see him play for his country to see what he is made of... please read and try to figure out what you've read sir.St Lucia is playing on Wednesday and he could ask to be featured in the team...But he will not.

His dad who played for the national team is no good example neither. He should have encouraged his son to play for St Lucia. All he seems interested in is the boy's fortune and fame. He is trying to live through this opportune moment. Such an opportunist!
        Why do parents do that?

So please read carefully what I wrote ok ole chap.

        (0)(1)
    • Gwen Peemah,

As I sit here and read your garbage, it's obvious that you have a personal vendetta against this young man and his family. My guess is you are very well aquainted with him and his family to know so much about them. Why don't you share the personal history between, you, him and his family with us. Maybe you get a high from your negativity and thus, you have to make it be know, or you just full of shit, just like you wrote on here. We will all be waiting patiently on your response.

      (1)(0)
    • You are one bitter witch, please get a life, and stop trying to ruin others.

      (1)(0)
      • Speak for yourself blooming idiot- You are twisted and vain mate. I do not know the family and only read reports about this boy on here and heard about him on the radio. A few lucians in the know from the South told me about him and they don't think he is all that.

What is your problem sicko? Go find something useful to occupy your sad little life with mate. You are nothing but a bad smell. You have not read one iota of what I wrote yet you are prepared to have a go.What a prat you are turning out to be. A right ole prat!
It's people like you that will be criticizing him in the future much the same way you lot have come down hard on Darren Sammy.

You see Sammy is different kettle of fish. He is from St Lucia. Plays for St Lucia and the West Indies and is very much involved with his community. He is someone I admire. He has not given up on his country. The same cannot be said about this young wannabe.

People like you don't have a life hence the reason why you cling onto the strings of this boy. If you had something meaningful to do then you would not even bother to sing the praises of someone who don't give a rat's nest about you. Get a life geezer!Nuff said.

        (0)(1)
        • Gwen Peemah

I wish I could really and truly tell you what a scumbag you are , but I will keep it clean, you are a worthless, jealous piece of crap, what have you done for your community, what is your claim to fame, absolutely not a darn thing. You are the most negative person on the planet, yours will come, don't you worry. Piece of shit. I hope this young man live to have a great career in soccer, whether for St Lucia or Canada, as long as he is happy doing what he does best.

My now deceased uncle once said to me,"Aloysius, any country or community that you reside in and the people there have hatred and jealousy towards success, you better watch your self." Gwen Peemah,my brother just try to re-think your attitude for the positive towards others.I don't know you but you sound like you are possessed by hatred and jealousy towards this young man who is just beginning to climb the success ladder.Gosh boy!How many persons you must have chant down their lives?I wonder? You sound evil, and with an attitude like that you are just destined to remain like that.

          (1)(0)
    • You are rude for basically calling the parents of the kid a gold-digger. Furthermore, if the parents want to milk of the kid, they can. They raised him and he did not pay a cent so him giving back to his parents at the end is a good thing. You are ignorant. Too nice of a word for you. You sound like you're jealous of him... LOL... Your opinion is irrelevant.

      (1)(0)
  7. I think many of you have no idea what football is about in today's world.Football nowadays is a business and if there is any young kid growing up whether in St.Lucia or any where else who is very good at playing the game he will be scouted and given a chance to play for the biggest clubs in the world. For example John Barnes who was born in Jamaica but moved to England played for Liverpool and England now he is a Liverpool legend and respected in Britain.Rahim Sterling is another born Jamaican moved to England now playing for Liverpool and England u21s.I am sure the Jamaicans are happy for their fellow country men why can't you St.Lucian's.You should just be happy for this young kid and wish him all the best.

    (0)(0)
    • worriedAbout Lucia

You speak of scouting as a certainty. Are there things in place to ensure this? Please enlighten us Sir/Madame because St Lucia is full of international top class talent.

      (0)(0)
  8. Juror Judge & Executioner, you're the typical type of lucian who will do nothing but hate rather than appreciate... instead of being proud of a St. Lucian like your self's accomplishment, you seek out the negativity first... let the Prime Minister be proud of a fellow son of the soil as he sees fit, meanwhile you can sit and dry out whilst this young man progresses.

    (0)(0)
  9. Oh boy you are so right. I remember growing up and seeing greats like Fairest, Abra, ti goat, etc treated like crap. Even newer players like titi, jackie, bootoo, etc, were treated like crap.

    (0)(1)
  10. Oh boy you are so correct. Mostly Castries players were given the opportunity to represent St. Lucia although there were better players from the South. Everything is Castries this Castries that. When I become PM I making sure I develop VF like is NY.

    (0)(0)
    • Well people like titi and boutoo got better treatment than the likes of st.rose,ti goat abra got the worst of it cause abra was the best forward at the time with the most goal making a mockery of the likes of st Lucian so call best defender at the time (go brown )which I might add he never was that honor goes to clouds which was called mister st Lucia because he understand the game plan which the Brazilian coach gave to them and go brown was lost ,and yet they had him abra on the bench whiles guys like buck and barboy get to play every game, which I should add that both buck n barboy end up being good players later on in life,so yes I can go on and on with players from the south who were Shun by the Castries coaches.sad but true

    • Terry Finisterre

Slow your roll. Are you talking about the late nineties and early 2000's when the national team was pretty much comprised of RAB, Northern United and one or two Square United players? Several of whom went on to success in the T&T Pro League and elsewhere?

      (0)(0)
  11. Sports in lucia is a waste of time u need to get out fassssssssssst for future progress

    (0)(0)
  12. Juror Judge & Executioner

What did St.lucia give him? He was born in a (nonsense) hospital, he's parents struggled throughout the years. Good for him ,Canada made his dreams a reality. You represent the country who gave you a chance to become an inspiration to other young people. The selfish and corrupt politicians back home are only there to fatten their pocket, not to help young people develop the skills and talents. I hate to say I wish we were still under British rule. St.Lucia would be better off. Our kids would have a chance to succeed in life. I wish I could give up my birthright as a St.Lucian.

    (0)(0)
    • Terry Finisterre

So let's send all our talented and intelligent people away. That will show the politicians!

By the way, you can very quickly give up your birthright. Buy a ticket, leave, destroy your passport. You I think we can afford to do without.

      (0)(0)
  13. Our PM is a He Po Creet.Only now VF playing field getting lights. The youths still cannot get time off work to represent their clubs not even without pay. They call the police if we play football in the square. The same PM sponsored a football tournament up to now that cannot end because of the officials. Why you'll fighting Green Lake?? The youths know what you about Kenny. You can fool the Bruceville people sometimes but you won't and can never fool we youths of today. We will eat and drink with you same speed we will vote you out of office. All of you'll SLP and UWP too.

  14. Stop trying politicize every dawn thing. You also sound like 'shampoo' and sour grapes.

    (0)(0)
  15. above comment is very true,i read he wants to play for canada to, i wish he would play for st lucia though.

    (0)(0)
    • Sorry to disappoint you but he will never play for st Lucia cause playing for st Lucia would be taking a step backwards, cause there is nothing the st Lucian coaches could teach him to better himself technically,or phicially soccer in the st Lucia is not the same in places like England or canada, the st Lucian coaches don't take the players to the gym to strengthen their bodies or have a day of class work teaching them plays but to be fair to the coaches most of the players now are not football smart they just have pure talent,so canigga is better off playing for canada cause playing for the st Lucian national team cannot improve his skills or trade as a player

      (0)(0)
      • It will also be more difficult getting a work permit if he represents St. Lucia instead of Canada. It is because St. Lucia is not ranked highly enough in world football.

        (0)(0)
        • Terry Finisterre

Does not matter who he represents, so long as he can maintain dual citizenship. So long as he has the Canada passport he will be able to benefit. Does not have to play a single minute for them.

          (0)(0)
      • Terry Finisterre

That's a vast and pretty ridiculous generalization, not to mention that you put Canadian football on the same level as English football. The fact that a six-year immigrant is being hailed as "Canada's greatest hope" should tell you all you need to know about the level of the sport in that country.

        (0)(0)
  16. Tell The Whole Truth

Poor Sane Pierre who was born bred and trained in St Lucia. Now playing in Italy for Genoa. This nonsense statement happens when one is not informed and want to make politics with everything that is popular. I want to informed the PM that there are other young players in Vieux Fort who played with Canigga and was as good as he was then. PM you all guys (both party) has not created the opportunity that Canigga have gotten overseas, and you know what? It is easy to do when one is concerned about the Youth. Though I agree with Canigga, it sad that he has agreed to represent Canada instead of St Lucia.

    (0)(0)
    • @tell the whole truth.sorry but this statement is made when one is informed,no PM can't mention players overseas if they don't know of them or if he wasn't informed.and further more he just congratulating him on his accomplishments thus far which was made possible by his uncle, father and families, and yes I do support him to play for canada instead of st Lucia cause for over 20 years I've watch good players form the south in particular left out the st Lucian national side when they were much better than the Castries players and even when they made the team the players were left on the bench, abra, ferrets.its only of late it's changing cause we've had a couple coaches from other areas apart from Castries.with that said I agree that the government has not done enough and it doing nothing for these promising youths.so when you talk about there were other young players who was as good as caning you forget to mention one big difference.canigga had the discipline motivation and family to help him go to the next level

      (0)(0)
      • Tell The Whole Truth

These were youth who had the same family support as Canigga. There is this young guy whose father works at the fisheries (pond). The father has spent time and the little money he have on his son playing football. He could have been better than Canigga. When Canigga left ST Lucia this young man showed more potential than him. Canigga showed more potential in athletic then but he loved football. I will reiterate that these politician ponces on anything popular. Zane Pierre represented St Lucia unlike Canigga. We all knew him. The Ministry knew him. They knew he had a contract. It may not have been during Dr. Kenny's time but don't give the impression that Canigga is the first St Lucia to vie for a big contract. It will always sound right that a PM congratulating someone doing something good. Most time it is done for political mileage. That is, wanting to be part of the issue of the day. I strongly believe it is just hypocrisy. Action speaks louder than words. AS PM he should be encouraged to do something for the youth. Let us hear his plan. We have lost a good player. If we had 6 good players like Canigga, he would probably consider playing for St Lucia instead.

        (0)(0)
        • worriedAbout Lucia

There's a lot of truth in your contribution but I disagree with certain things.

Like Oh boy said they can only show support when they're informed but I feel as a Government authority they should really have their ears pinned to the ground and not only spot the rising stars but provide oppportunities for them TO rise and give the youth incentive and support to reach their true potential with a heavy branding of patriotism. They should all be proud, no matter where they make it to say where they are from.

Tell the truth, only Canigga can tell you who he would pick given the choice; most people would go for the big league. Arsenal? St Lucia? hmm, sorry Helen of the West but them FA players make millions! lol.

        • Tell the whole truth ,,,,, my question is what can the PM gain from congratulating canigga.and yes I will be the first to agree with you that there were lots of players who might have showed more potential than canigga but again the family support was not there for them to get to the next level and I'm talking about being in the right place at the right time to be a better player like canigga is doing in canada.he would have just been another good player stuck in st Lucia so let's be honest here most so these kids don't have the basics of stoping a ball or making a proper pass yes they have raw talent but st Lucia don't have the facilities or academies to teach these kids and take them to the next level .so even if we had six players like canigga he still wouldn't play for st Lucia because guess what we have had more than 6 players better than canigga is now which I must add were all from the south and they still were not playing for because of preference.so my dear friend unless st Lucia clean up their act from the minister of sport to the football association I don't advice any footballer to play for st Lucia if they can play for another country.

    • Don't you think there are other young people who is as good as he is right there in st lucia? where is the support to make it in st lucia? Lucians need to support each other regardless of where you from or who your family is. young man you represent who gave you the opportunity to make this far. hope you make it!!
