PRESS RELEASE: Saint Lucia observes World Breastfeeding Week

breastfeedThe Ministry of Health and Wellness joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week, which is observed every year from August 1-7th.

The theme this year is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”, which calls for a collective effort in creating a conducive and supportive environment that encourages all mothers to breastfeed their babies.

Recognizing the importance of breastfeeding in saving lives of infants and young children, the World Health Organization -WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund- UNICEF, jointly developed the Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding, to revitalize the world’s attention to the impact that feeding practices can have on the nutritional status, growth and development, and the very survival of infants and young children.

In commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week, the INFANT and YOUNG CHILD FEEDING COMMITTEE of the Ministry of Health and Wellness, will be embarking on a grand breastfeeding promotional activity on Friday August 4th at the CAR PARK of the MASSY STORE in LATOUNEY, VIEUX-FORT from 9.00AM–4.00 PM.

The services on that day will include breastfeeding information, Breastfeeding paintings on display, Baby items. There will also be musical entertainment among others.

The public is therefore invited to come out and support the upcoming breastfeeding promotional activity.
