PRESS RELEASE: RSL closes, unemployment increases

The Saint Lucia Labour Party notes that more than twenty (20) employees of Radio Saint Lucia will join thousands of NICE workers further swelling the ranks of the unemployed in Saint Lucia.

The SLP says that it is regrettable that the government did not find it possible to find a suitable formula to keep RSL open but could instead use of the hard earned taxes of the people of Saint Lucia to fund a foreign entity, OJO Labs.

The Saint Lucia Labour Party does not accept the excuse that no suitable solution could be found to keep Radio Saint Lucia, a Saint Lucian entity that has served the people of Saint Lucia for decades, open for the benefit of the people of Saint Lucia.

The SLP calls on the government to rethink its position on the closing of other statutory boards and give first priority to the jobs of the workers of these organisations.

  1. DO tell about OJO Labs. BTW I don't feel sad for RSL. They did nothing to improve the quality of their product.

  2. What's next, a press release from the SLP on elimination of transistor radios and a petition opposing wireless services and broadband internet?

    Perhaps it might read:..

"The Saint Lucia Labour Party does not accept the excuse that no suitable solution could be found to maintain the operation of transistor radios, an icon that has served the people of Saint Lucia for over seven decades for the benefit of the people of Saint Lucia."

RSL was a dinosaur. Times gave changed. Technology has changed.

Most importantly, people's media consumption patterns have significantly changed. RSL didn't adapt. It's that simple.

And if there is an appetite in the market for the content they were offering, it's easy for anyone to set up a web-based radio station offering similar content, without the burdensome overhead that RSL carried.
