The National Electoral Council confirmed that more than 8 million Venezuelans voted in the historical elections in Venezuela, yesterday, which the president of the Electoral Power, Tibisay Lucena, confirmed is more than 41.5% of the Permanent Electoral Registry.
It is important to note that the normal trend of voter participation in the Venezuelan presidential elections reaches a maximum of 70% of the total registered voters. It is therefore important that participation levels have reached a total of 41.5% of the total recorded.
The Venezuelan authorities have indicated that their expectations were exceeded.
Last night 537 members of the National Constituent Assembly were elected and they will be responsible for determining the country´s immediate future. Tomorrow, August 1, eight indigenous representatives will be elected under a system that respects the customs of the native people.
On the other hand, the Opposition ordered a series of blockades in several of the main streets of the country. The National Guard, therefore, had to confront violent groups in 4 of the 24 regions as extremist groups were able to penetrate security in several electoral centres and destroyed, at least, 100 electoral machines. As a result, the electoral authorities activated contingency voting centres to accommodate persons who could not exercise their right to vote at their respective centres.
Venezuela´s Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino Lopez, described as successful the plan activated to guarantee security during the electoral process. More than 230 thousand members of the National Guard were deployed to over 14 thousand electoral centres across the 24 states of Venezuela.
Despite these difficulties Venezuelans went to vote. The ultraconservative sectors failed in their attempt to prevent the massive participation of the people of Venezuela in this election process.
After the official results were announced, Maduro thanked the people of Venezuela for their massive participation and pointed out that this is the first time that the Bolivarian Revolution has achieved that many votes in any elections, with more than 8 million votes in favour, but lamented that the Opposition did not accept the challenge to participate in the elections.
