PRESS RELEASE: Major berth expansion at Port Castries on schedule

By SLTB

The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) is making steady progress with its berth expansion project at Port Castries.

This was revealed at a meeting with the Saint Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB) on Monday, August 7 when SLASPA provided an update on the project. SLASPA is constructing an extension of the Cruise Ship Berth No. 1 at Pointe Seraphine in Castries to facilitate the successful and safe mooring of Quantum Class vessels in wind speeds up to 40 knots.

The current berth will be extended by 160ft (48.8m) long by 80ft (24.4m) wide. Three (3) additional mooring dolphins will also be erected.

The construction is being carried out by Ballast Nedam International Projects B.V., a Dutch-based construction and engineering company.

A significant portion of the workforce employed on the construction project is local, which is having vital skills and capacity-building benefits for those employed.

SLASPA and Ballast Nedam International Projects B.V. are ensuring that international health and safety standards are adhered to while local company, Engineering Construction and Management Consulting Ltd. (ECMC), is overseeing the technical implementation of the project on behalf of SLASPA.

The project is on schedule to be completed by early December with the fully expanded berth ready to receive Quantum Class vessels by January 2018. Pointe Seraphine Berth #2 is still open and ready to receive smaller vessels when they begin to arrive at Port Castries in October.

The SLTB was pleased with the project update and the fact that cruise visitors and locals can continue to enjoy shopping and other facilities at Pointe Seraphine during the expansion.

The Board is committed to a quality visitor experience for cruise tourists and this berth expansion project will enhance this along with the other planned improvements for the city of Castries.

As a result of the expansion, for the 2017/2018 cruise season, Saint Lucia is poised to record its highest ever number of cruise passengers with a projected figure of over 800,000 passengers.

  1. So the Bid for this job was an open Bid, open to any competitor,
    that's a very good start.

But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don't worry or be afraid of their threats.

  3. Great news! The labour component, whatever the size, was mentioned. This suggests that the Authority's planners are wonderfully thinking people. We need to involve the locals in every building project, and as far as their training can take them. That officially must be part of all agreements too.
Next for, perhaps the single most technologically savvy group in Saint Lucia, the Authority, is a view on the future regarding passenger aircraft. The USA's Boeing and the EU's Airbus passenger developments must be continuously monitored, to anticipate modifications to the landing strip at HIA especially. George Charles Airport, still looks like an asset waiting for conversion of Port Castries into a recognised regionally competitive turnaround port, for the cruise business.

  5. New Testament Verse of the Day:
But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

  6. New Testament Verse of the Day:
These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold; though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

  7. Now you're talking: I like that.
The Dutch are masters in the Art of Marine Development. Theirs is a long history in marine
development. A big chunk of Holland is reclaimed land on the Atlantic so I'm happy for
St. lucia that the Government is at last searching for Professionals in their respective
fields to do business with, and the ones who do employ 'Locals' & it's high time.

  10. Sounds beautiful I like that, keep on keeping on. Now! next project, the surrounding area like the market and the CDC omg this place need some serious facelift. The CDC I don’t know how people can deal with this congestion and smells “wow” this is a health hazard. This don’t only affect the people that live there but the consumers as well. THIS PLACE IS A MESS. For the Capital of our country “really” Lucians. This is one of the first of many places visitor see when they are introduced to our island, too many government have come and go with this place looking and smelling like this. Why do our culture seem to carry zero pride of ourselves? We talk the talk but the walking part is non-existence. Wonder why outsiders come and take over what we have, because they can see we lack the love for our own people and country.

  13. Well, SLASPA had better hurry up and make it a bit more snappy than "steady" because anyone coming into port can easily observe a huge fall or downturn in ship count in nearly two months. ONE ship-a-week simply won't do. Can
