PRESS RELEASE: Football competition launched in honour of Aurelien family

The Gros Islet Football League in collaboration with the Gros Islet Youth Development Council held its press launch for the GIFL/AURELIEN SOLES INVITATIONAL CUP at the headquarters of the Saint Lucia Football Association.

This is an inaugural competition, named after the AURELIEN family for their continued support to the community of Gros Islet.

At the press launch, Mr Desir, President of the Northern Zone, welcomed this U16 competition to his zone as it builds from the just concluded U13 Northern Zone Guardsman Tournament where Pioneers FC emerged Champions. Youth football is the cornerstone of the St. Lucia Football Association mandate and programmes such as these continues to build on that mandate.

Shayne Paul, President of the Gros Islet Football League, thanked Mr Alfonso AURELIEN immensely for coming on board.

He went on to highlight the success of past youth tournaments bringing out the best in his district team; as every year Gros Islet Football League produces on average six (6) national players.

Mr Paul spoke on tournament structure which indicated that ten (10) teams will be participating in the upcoming two-day competition. Clubs include: GMC United, Northern United, Reduit F.C., Pioneers F.C, Valley Soccer, Choppers F.C, TValley F.C, Boys Training School, Big Players and VSADC.

Date: July 29th to July 30th
Time: 9am to 6pm

Feature Address was done by the Sponsor, Mr Alfonso AURELIEN.

He explained how the idea came about four (4) years ago when he visited his community of Grande Rivere with his two young sons. The day before he left his son did the unthinkable: he gave both of his football boots to some kids he met at training that appeared to have none.

Fast forward to 2017, Mr Alfonso has now landed with 565 trainers and football boots to give to all players in the Northern Zone as well as the National Team along with the Grande Rivere primary school. He has indicated the main beneficiary of this donation will be the GMC United Club. After the competition each player will walk home with a brand new sneaker and a gold medal as all are winners.

At the Press Launch GMC United received two full football kits along with a small quantity of football gears from the AURELIEN Family.

The Council and Football League is proud of the AURELIEN family and hope this bond continues for years to come.
