PRESS RELEASE: Emancipation Day Celebrations in Belle Vue, Vieux-Fort

By Kendall Elva

The folk musicians of Belle Vue, Vieux-Fort invite all drummers and the general public to participate in an evening of drumming slated for Tuesday 1st August, 2017 at the Belle Vue Playing Field commencing at 5:00 pm.

This evening of drumming will feature drummers from two well known folk groups: Avot Sevis and Soufriere Action Theater. Additionally, drummers who are not members of the aforementioned groups will be allowed to showcase the drumming skills.

The purpose of this activity is to commemorate Emancipation Day 2017. Members of Avot Sevis and Soufriere Action Theater are of the view that observations of this nature are important and timely considering St. Lucia’s history with slavery and the fact that most of its population is made up of individuals who are the descendants of African slaves.

Accordingly, the drummers of both groups encourage St. Lucians to reflect on the strides that we have made as a people during this post-emancipation era. Also, they urge St. Lucians to engage in actions which will help preserve the freedoms that we enjoy in this post-emancipation.
