Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony will on Tuesday address concerns over reports that the United States (US) has prohibited local police officers from participating in training programmes arranged or financed by the US.
His August 20 address will be made at 8 p.m., according to a press release from the press secretary.
Last week, the prime minister had indicated that the situation involved “serious and complex” matters.
“The government of Saint Lucia is aware of the concerns and anxieties expressed by the public over the decision by the United States to disallow officers of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force from participating in several training programmes arranged or financed by the United States. The government also appreciates that these concerns and anxieties extend to the ranks of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force,” a government release said last week.
“These reactions are understandable especially as delicate matters of security are involved. It is also undeniable that it is in our vital interest to maintain close ties of co-operation with the United States in security matters,” it further stated.
