Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony hosted ‘Golden Years’ members of the Cacoa, Babonneau Gospel Baptist Church at his official residence in Vigie, Castries yesterday.
Golden Years consists of approximately 22 individuals over 60. The group has been around for five years.
The seniors used the opportunity to interact with the prime minister and share their views on topical issues such as same sex marriages, health care and recreational activities, particularly for the elderly. They lamented the cessation of the Senior Games at the National Stadium, Vieux-Fort.
The Government of Saint Lucia was commended for the Home Help for the Elderly programme introduced last year. However, the seniors expressed a desire to see more activities and opportunities geared towards the elderly, given the fact that people are living longer.
Housing assistance, for example, was raised as an area where the Government and the various groups can work together to make the lives of the elderly more comfortable and enjoyable.
Dr Anthony has pledged to provide assistance in both areas, to the extent possible, under the current economic conditions.
