PRESS RELEASE – Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs, Planning and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Kenny D. Anthony, says the Government of Saint Lucia is aware that the Fisheries Complex has payments outstanding to fishermen, particularly from Laborie and Vieux Fort.

The Prime Minister has confirmed that the sums will be settled in short order.

According to Dr. Anthony,“I wish to reassure our fishing community, especially those who earn their livelihoods from the seas off our south-west corridor, that these unresolved amounts will be paid in the next few days. Over the past few days I have had meetings with the manager of the Fisheries Complex and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries over the situation confronting the Complex. I wish to reassure our fishing community that they will be paid in the next few days as the Government is now in the process of sourcing funds to meet the outstanding payments.”

The Prime Minister further explained that the Fisheries Complex is operating at a huge loss, a challenge he explains the new Board will have to handle swiftly.

Said Dr. Anthony, “Since 2010, the Government of Saint Lucia has subsidised the operations of the Complex by a staggering five million dollars (EC$5,000,000). This situation cannot continue indefinitely, and the new Board of the Complex will have to engage the fishing community with alacrity to reduce and eliminate the losses incurred by the Complex. We have to find solutions, because the situation is untenable.”

A new Board for the Complex will be announced in the coming weeks.

  1. Good. When he was opposition leader his words were pay the fishermen now or you will see now apart from them not getting paid by his government, he put an incompetent manager there (who his brother ausbert ,travelled around the globe with his standard six certificate looking for a college to put him, but was never successful @that))running things ,so what do you expect. Four long years they talking of putting board in place, ,where is it?maybe still waiting for more party harks? En Rouge

  3. BUSINESS WILL IMPROVE WHEN THEY CAN EXPORT THEIR FISH TO MARTINIQUE AND GUADELOUPE BUT FOR THAT TO HAPPEN THE COMPLEX WILL NEED HACCP CERTIFICATION OR SHOULD HOST MERCURY BEACH IN VIEUX FORT.

  5. All the issues that Dr Kenny Anthony was most vociferous about when in opposition have come to bite him in the rear as captain of his sinking ship. Quite apart from his failed promise of jobs, jobs, jobs he implemented VAT with alacrity as soon as he assumed office, a tax he called 'oppressive". He was all gang ho about fishermen getting paid on time (and rightfully so); why is his Government not paying the fishermen on time? And he talks about the losses at the Fisheries! People's contract were terminated for allegedly poor performance when he assumed office, so what happen to the Manager at the Fisheries? Who takes responsibility for the losses? By now he should be registering huge profits. Any way Kenny has set the most negative records as Prime Minister. Record closure of small businesses, record unemployment among youth, record suicide cases, record foreclosures on properties of all types.
