PHOTOS: Minor construction hiccup on ALBA-funded bridge?

Photos submitted to St. Lucia News Online (SNO) today (June 23) show a partial collapse of the $1.7 million ALBA-funded bridge which will link the Vieux Fort North community of Belle Vue and Desruisseaux in Micoud South.

When contacted about the news tip, Executive Assistant to the Minister of Infrastructure Silas Wilson said he is not aware of the collapse but said based on the description information given, the matter is a non-issue and a non-story.

Wilson said the bridge is still under construction and is closed to the public, suggesting that such hiccups are sometimes expected during construction projects.

Efforts by SNO to reach officials directly linked to the project have so far proved futile.

The De Mailley Bridge Reconstruction project’s sod-turning ceremony took place in February 2014.

The bridge, which was damaged by Hurricane Tomas in 2010, will cost $1,769, 965.40.

It is one of three of such structures which are being financed by ALBA through grant funds.

The two-lane reinforced concrete bridge project is expected to last seven months.

  2. Silas Wilson is a consultant too. What is KDA's plan, to replace Public Servants with his party supporters (consultants, NICE, STEP, SMILE)? Public Servants, I suggest you'll watch you'll backs.

  3. It would be worthwhile for all the previous commentators to go down to the site and see with their own two eyes what took place as I did. The bridge did not collapse as is being erroneously stated. They were in the process of pouring concrete on the deck when the underlying support gave way causing the concrete to fall to the bottom. The bridge structure is still intact. This is an ongoing construction and set backs do happen. We can thank God no one was hurt or killed.

    • Ok...so what if this didn't happen and concrete was allowed to be poured unawares, then allowed to dry and allow the public to use.
Don't you think it would be a disaster waiting to happen?

Come on now, you can't be so Naïve.

      • After the construction of any concrete structure especially bridges the recommended guideline is to allow the concrete to settle for 21 to 28 days. This allows time for the concrete to cure properly and also gives the engineers time to carry out an assessment of the completed project. It is only after the engineers give the green light that the bridge would be opened to the public. This is to ensure safety for all parties concerned.

  4. Philip J Pierre, what say you. How dirty and nasty you SLP guys are. My World, St. Lucian stand up to Kenny and his boys. That bridge if you ask me. IS not as safe as it should be now. Where were the Ministry of infrastructure officials it say we have a problem or were they paid to stay away from that project?

  5. I have a serious problem with Politicians and the way they are toying with this islands key infrastructure.

Boys and Girls of the SLP.

Would you please ensure the safety and building of those bridges are handled by Key and Known Contractors who have the Intelligence, knowledge and ability to ensure those bridges are properly built to international standards.

I am getting really pissed with how you have no regard with the safety of others.

And it reflects upon us as people who really do not give a damn, because after-all, you are our peers. You are elected by US from amongst US.

Just think about it and please do the right thing, for once.

  7. From the photos I see a decking collapse. How can Silas say a partial bridge collapse is a none issue when money has been spent to put it up now money has to spend to put it up again.I wonder if the money for that bridge was coming from Silas's pocket, would he make a statement like that?

    (0)(0)

    • the money that will be spent to reconstruct will be paid by the contractor and not the government, the bridge is intact its only the support for the decking which gave way when concrete was being poured, construction of the bridge is far from finished.

  8. As an engineer (not engine-far) a bridge spanning over water, needs some reinforcement of the actual briding component while it is being constructed. I've seen major bridges constructed in developed nations which build a piece at a time, from one side to the next, or in cases where the span is short, a support beam (or beams) are added. From this picture, neither is taking place. There are WAY too many rebars (reinforced steel bars) on that bridge. It's almost like they're trying to build a house, on it's side! And a rough cost estimate of this is a little under a million dollars; someone's pocket is getting lined with the rest I'm sure.

  9. Yes SILAS you see St.Lucians the nastiness that happens when people are paid with our tax monies to people who knows nothing. This is a non issue a non story. I think we should file an injunction in the courts against this people, and the cousin of Kenny who has the contract probably thought he was fixing a shoe!!!!

  11. LORD PUT A HAND IN THIS COUNTRY,HELP US FOR THOSE POLITICIANS THINK WE ARE SO STUPID. SLP/UWP/LPM ,IT'S NOT BECAUSE WE HAVE NOT FORMED A PARTY ON OUR OWN THAT WE ARE UNEDUCATED OR INCAPABLE OF RUNNING THE COUNTRY .SILAS WILSON HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF CONSTRUCTION YET HE IS CONSULTANT TO J.PIERE. WHEN THEY REPORT THE DESTRUCTION HE WILL SAY,"THE MATTER IS A NON-ISSUE AND A NON-STORY."BS!YOU ALL HAVE TO GO.

  12. Silas would not know anything about the bridge because he is too busy cashing skirts all over the Mabouya Valley. T o add insult to injury by claiming that the bridge is a "non issue ...non- story" ? SMH. I want to know if and when the Richfond and La Ressource or DESPIN!! bridges collapse whether your pants will agree that these are still "non issue". SHAME!!

  13. What is the role of the executive assistant?
Why does the minister need an executive assistant?
Isn't there a Permanent Secertary and Deputy Permanent Secretary within the ministry?
What is the executive assistant's monthly wage?
Is there really a need for an executive assistant within the ministry?

  14. This is a non-issue. The party hacks are just digging dirt. If there was a collapse after concrete was poured this alarm would have scored some points. As of now it is simply a false alarm. It appears someone wanted the construction contract or a job on that project. This is just my 50 cents.
