Review of Saturday’s opening of men’s baskeball league

The Season Opener of the National Men’s Basketball League got underway this past weekend at the Beausejour Indoor Facility with two invitational games from the touring Tortola Legs team and two games from the Premier League Division.

The Opening Ceremony started the day’s proceedings with the presence of special invited guests Mrs. Fortuna Belrose, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, representing sponsors from Bank of St. Lucia Ltd, Monster Energy Drink, The Cell, The Computer Store and Dr. Freezers.

First game of the Saturday night encounters was an invitational game between our very own Morne Gladiators and the visiting Tortola Legs team. In what was the second victory in as many nights for our visitors, they easily got past the Gladiators who gave a good account of themselves but fell short.

In game two of the double header, defending champions Courts Jets continued their dominance over Canaries Moon River to defeat them 76 – 59 in what was a rematch of last year’s three game series finals.

For the Jets, celebrating his birthday, Ron Dumurville led the way with 21 pts, 4 rebs and 2 assists. He was aided by Andre Louison with 19 pts, 5 rebs and 3 steals and Keegan Preville with a double double of 17 pts and 10 rebs off the bench.

For Canaries, Durocher Antoine top scored with 17 pts and 7 rebs in a losing effort. The Valley Cold Storage Player of the Game was Ron Dumurville for his 21 pts, 4 rebs and 2 assists.

On Sunday, game 1 saw the touring Tortola Legs team put on a clinic and totally outclassed our VBCC Warlords to secure a perfect 3-0 record on their trip. VBCC had an early 9 – 5 lead but then ended the quarter down 8 points with a 19 – 11 lead for Tortola going on a 14 – 2 run to end the first. The Legs never looked back from that point and finished the game comfortably with an 88 – 54 win.

Game two of the night featured another Premier League clash, the Babonneau Dynasty under the supportive watch of Constituency Rep Minister Alvina Reynolds, got past a stubborn Dennery 73 – 62. The Dynasty closed off strongly winning the final quarter 19 – 8 to take full control of the game.

For Dynasty, Tim Baptiste finished with impressive figures of 18 pts, 9 rebs, 9 steals and 4 assists. Lester Jn Charles also contributed with a double double of 17 pts and 11 rebs.

Veteran player Desmond Vidal top scored for Dennery with 18 pts and grabbed 6 rebs and injury plagued Kevin Mathurin on the night contributed 13 pts and 3rebs in a losing effort. The Valley Cold Storage Player of the Game was Tim Baptiste for his 18 pts, 9 rebs and 9 steals.
