PRESS RELEASE – Last month was a key time for the Caribbean nation.

16 countries came to Barbados to outline the growing epidemic that is not only plaguing other nations, but right here at home in Saint Lucia as well.

The 3 day conference brought together professionals, researchers, clinicians, policy makers and members of Alzheimer associations under one roof. In partnership with the Barbados Alzheimer’s Association, ADI co-hosted the 3rd Regional Caribbean Conference on Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

In attendance to represent Saint Lucia was Nurse Posvar, a 16 year Alzheimer’s specialist that resides in Monchy. She brought back to our island new information as well as the necessary techniques needed in the helping of those with Alzheimer’s. All very important tools that are much needed here on our small island. Her attendance at the conference was well received by everyone as she spoke on her vast studies, as well as her experiences in the field of Alzheimer’s. An Alzheimer’s workshop was held for all members as well as potential members throughout the Caribbean and other nations.

The main objective of the conference was to participate, learn and share thoughts and ideas. Anastasia Psoma, Mike Splaine and Johan Vos led the workshop, which focused on strengthening capacity and working more closely as a regional network.

Presenters included representatives from Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), HelpAge International and the Healthy Caribbean Coalition. Key topics included the recent policies at a global and regional level, experiences shared by persons with dementia and their care partner, epidemiology, nutrition, and care and prevention.
