Originally set for trial due to a plea of not guilty, Clement indicated through his attorney that he was willing to change his plea to avoid the process of trial by jury.
After ensuring that the defendant was fully aware of the implications of his new position, Justice Cumberbatch accepted the plea of guilty from Clement.
At the time of the incident in 2010, Clement was a 25-year-old farmer of Fond St. Jacques and the virtual complainant was a 15-year-old student of the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School. Clement claims that he and the complainant entered a consensual relationship and had sex on at least two known occasions.
The matter was discovered and reported by the victim’s brother who had cause to search for his sister at the home of Clement on November 1, 2010.
The matter has been adjourned to April 18, 2013 for a presentence report.
