Former Opposition Leader and Castries North Member of Parliament Stephenson King has clarified statements made about his political future with the United Workers Party (UWP).

King told members of the media yesterday that though a few politicians have made public statements about him, he is the only one that can speak on his behalf.

Ousted UWP member and Castries Central Member of Parliament Richard Frederick had said King would not run on a UWP ticket as long as Allen Chastanet is political leader.

However, UWP Chairman Ezechiel Joseph had said that King wrote the party expressing his desire to run for office in his constituency in the next general elections.

“There have been statements made, but no one has that authority to speak for me and therefore the media should not dwell on such statements. Mr. Frederick’s opinion is just an opinion…no one have the mandate to speak on my future political involvement,” he said.

Meanwhile, in addressing the issue of him being absent from most meetings coordinated by the UWP, King said that his absence at most meetings is merely because he was never invited.

“I attend meetings that I am invited to and I don’t attend one, once an agenda is not given, as required by the constitution. Once that is not provided then it means it is not important,” he explained.

The former opposition leader claims he has not been invited to many of the recent UWP meetings. “I’ve not been receiving notices about those meetings, which again is the requirement of the constitution,” he added.

However, Chastanet and Joseph have both said that King has not been attending regular party meetings and have encouraged him to do so.

King said despite all that is being said about him, he will continue to work for his constituency and ensure that their concerns are addressed.

  1. when there was no allen chastnet and richard federick there was king. Its a shame though that you dont hear the voice of the true uwp members on the issue such as leonard montoute.all you hear are the power crazed wanna be pm's.you can expect loyalty from the people when you cant get it within the ranks of your own establishment.

  3. Only fools would agree to do Richard Fredericks bidding. Free men and women who understand what the country needs right now, won't be influence by Fredo.
St Lucia needs a new political culture not more of the same.

    • Hi Vex,

I know King since I was about fourteen years and although he may not remember me but what I know of him is all good. People like to stain your name when politics comes but anytime one joins that group of polititian I must say if they cant take the heat they will have to step out because the opposing side will say no matter what. King is cool and I am happy one person mention it.

  5. Think that's a step in the right direction Mr. King. This party needs to put its act together if it wants to be any viable opposition for the next general elections.

  6. WHO CARES. BOTH LABOUR AND UWP ARE DOING OR HAVE DONE MISERABLY TRYING TO MANAGE THE COUNTRIES AFFAIRS. UWP's little internal political discourse needs to stop. And quite frankly labour party needs to go.

  9. YOU SEE WHY HE COULDNT BE A LEADER?! WHEN SOMEONE HAS PEOPLE TALKING FOR HIM TO THE POINT WHERE HE NEEDS TO COME OUT AND SAY THAT THEY ARE NOT SPEAKING FOR HIM, THEN HE IS NO LEADER. HE IS A FOLLOWER, A SHEEP, WHICH IS OK...BUT DONT ACT LIKE YOU ARE ANYTHING MORE...HE NEEDS TO BE KICKED OUT THE PARTY! HE ALLOWED A YEAR OF TURMOIL, WHEN HE COULD HAVE EASILY TOLD FREDERICK WHERE TO GO...BUT THE CHASTANETS SOME COLD DUDES....THEYLL GET RID OF HIM ANYWAY....UBALDUS TO THE RESCUE!

  12. King's reasoning for not attending meetings is poor. He was invited. Written agenda may not have been possible. Also there might have been good reasons why the agenda was not sent.

    • Very true! If you are a member of an organisation, I am confused as to why you need to be "invited" to a meeting. It seems that King has already considered himself an outsider or generally just "not that interested".

  17. It was about damn time for King to distance himself from statements made by Richard Frederick. He has finally realize that his only future is to be a member of UWP
