Nine months jail for trespassing; man gets two years for snatching woman’s bag

A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to nine months in prison for unlawfully being in a house in Massade.

Jonel Auguste, who is originally from Soufriere but residing in Gros Islet, was found on the premises of Lennon Verdant at about 4 a.m. on June 2, 2013.

Verdant’s mother was the one who first spotted Auguste. She immediately started screaming and called out to her son. At that time, Auguste ran out of the house. Her son, Lennon, chased but was unable to catch him.

The following day Auguste was arrested and charged.

He pleaded guilty to the offence on June 12, 2013 and was sentenced by Magistrate Velon John on June 19, 2013. August has similar previous convictions.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Harry of Pavee was sentenced to two years in  jail after he was found guilty of stealing a woman’s bag.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on November 15, 2012. The complainant, Soralee Wilfred, was walking in the Morne area when Harry snatched her bag, which contained personal items.

Although she chased the defendant, she eventually lost track of him but later made a report to police.

He was later arrested and charged and found guilty by Magistrate Velon John.

Harry was sentenced to 18 months prison last month for a similar offense which occurred in the same area in August last year.
