A new Ambassador Designate of the delegation of the European Union to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean has presented his credentials in Saint Lucia.
On Thursday, January 17, 2013, Saint Lucia’s Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy accepted the Letters of Credence of the Head of the Delegation of the European Union, His Excellency Mr. Mikael Barford.
His Excellency Mr. Barford underlined the maturity and harmony of the relationship between Saint Lucia and the European Union since 1979, when diplomatic relations were first established.
“I note the excellent relationship the EU has built with the various government ministries, and we are very proud of the achievements of the joint EU/Saint Lucia development programme, both in the past and what is to come. I am particularly looking forward to the opening of Saint Lucia’s new National Hospital, which will take place later in 2013.”
Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy highlighted the quality and success of the joint development co-operation programmes undertaken to date. The Governor General also expressed gratitude for the support of the European Union in the face of a challenging global economy.
“Your Excellency, you spoke of Nobel Prizes. Let me take this opportunity to extend congratulations on behalf of the Government of Saint Lucia to the European Union on its award of the Nobel Peace Prize. Your presence in Saint Lucia this week coincides with the celebration of our own Nobel Prizes as we are poised to begin next week our annual observance of Nobel Laureate week in recognition of the achievements of our own two Laureates and in our continuing effort to nurture and encourage excellence in every field of endeavour. Indeed there is a lot we can share in this regard. ”
Her Excellency wished the ambassador a fruitful tour of duty, emphasizing the commitment to maintain and strengthen the excellent relations forged thus far.
