PRESS RELEASE – The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports has formally announced the appointment of Jim Xavier as the new Director of Youth and Sports, effective May 1, 2014.

He succeeds Victor Reid who had a long tenure in the position.

With almost 25 years’ experience in youth work, Xavier started his career as a youth placement officer in the Ministry of Community Development, Youth, Social Affairs and Sports (Youth Skills Division).

The position of placement officer was re-designated and upgraded to the position of programme development officer 1 in the Department of Youth and Sports (Ministry of Education, Human Resource Development, Youth and Sports) and Xavier was promoted to that position effective 1st June 2003. With the change of the department to a ministry, Xavier maintained his post of Programme Development Officer up until April 2014.

After receiving news of his appointment, Xavier has reaffirmed his commitment to Youth Development and Sports and looks forward to the support, challenges and progress of the ministry.

The new Director is currently attending the “Regional Sports for Development” conference hosted by the Caribbean Sports and Development Agency in Trinidad and Tobago where all Directors with responsibility for Youth and Sports are gathered to share ideas and strategies for the region. Xavier is expected to return to Saint Lucia on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

Xavier was the coordinator for Youth Month activities 2014. The latest event being last Saturday’s annual Youth Awards where the Ministry recognized the outstanding youth for 2013.

The Ministry of Youth Development and Sports wishes Xavier all the best in his new position.

Xavier was the recipient of an award from the Duke of Edinburgh at this year’s Youth Awards.

  2. Hopefully Mr. Xavier, you are nothing like Victor Reid, who turned me away in 1995, when I went to seek government assistance after having secured a full scholarship to a US college. Again Congratulation on your new appointment Mr. Xavier.
