A new approach implemented in 2012 to deal with sports on the island has yielded much result, according to the Minister of Sports Shawn Edward.
According to him, his ministry had decided to engage sporting associations, youth and sports councils on the island on a quarterly basis instead of only “when something went wrong,” as had been done in the past.
“We took the decision that we’re gonna bring them in on a quarterly basis to apprise them of the work of the ministry and to also take the opportunity to collaborate with them as it relates to the execution of their related programs,” he said adding that this has yielded two successful years for St. Lucian sports.
“…What have we gotten from that Mr. Speaker? From 2012-2014 … Saint Lucia has won 12 different sporting championships in the different sporting disciplines,” he said while mentioning a few of these successes.
Some included the recently revamped Windward Islands Football Championship, and several other contests such as the OECS swimming, boxing and table tennis championships and the Under-19 Windwards Cricket Championships.
Edward took the opportunity to praise a number of Saint Lucian athletes who have been performing well on the local and international scale. Laverne Spencer, Darren Sammy and Johnson Charles were among those mentioned.
“This country is a rich repository of sporting talent…,” he said emphatically.
