National Students’ Council elects new executive

PRESS RELEASE – The Annual National Students’ Council General Assembly was held on Thursday, December 8th 2017, subsequent to a postponement from the original date, November 24th.

This year, student councils from secondary and tertiary institutions around the island convened at the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School’s auditorium with the aim of promoting unity, and forming a greater connection throughout the national student body, by strengthening the resolve of its members.

The day commenced with brief remarks from the executives former vice president (districts 1-4), Josiah Biscette, National Youth Council representative, Dianthia Justin, young leader Nyus Alfred, and outgoing president, Ajani Lebourne.

The young activist and advocate for student governance, and the new “Queen’s Young Leader” for St. Lucia, enlightened the students by sharing his experience as President, encouraging them to do more , be more and to effect change in their communities , their schools and the nation.

He also presented the National Student Council’s strategic action plan for the next years as well as an overview of the constitution.

As the day progressed, outgoing council members, Sophie Klien (assistant secretary), and, again, Josiah Biscette, spoke about the sacrifices necessary to effectively perform in the various posts, the various challenges, as well as the benefits, all in an effort to sensitize the students and potential candidates on the demands of the National Student Council and the weight of the responsibilities as executive members.

The day climaxed with a speed campaigning session where candidates were given the opportunity to present their plans as hopefuls for each executive position.

The positions of Vice President for districts 5-8, and General Secretary both went unopposed; whereas the others brought students to a full-fledged politician mode during the speed campaign round.

Two delegates from each school then proceeded to elect the members of the new executive for the year 2016 to 2017.

The new executive of the student body is as follows:

President: Joshua Harrow [ Vide Boutielle Secondary School]
Vice President [Districts 1-4]: Mijan Augustus [Castries Comprehensive Secondary School]
Vice President [Districts 5-8]: Verneige Joseph [ Vieux-Fort Comprehensive A-Level]
General Secretary : Sophie Klien [Sir Arthur Lewis Community College – Morne Fortune]
Assistant Secretary: Jermaine Albert [Sir Arthur Lewis Community College – Southern Extension]
Public Relations Officer : Keyanna Marcellin [Vieux-Fort Comprehensive Secondary School]
Treasure: Anaiah Ferdinand [Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School]

Before the students departed, a very unexpected but welcomed surprise came from 2nd vice president of the National Youth Council, Tevin Shepherd, who, by video, encouraged the country’s council members to keep up the good work, as well extended heartfelt congratulations to the new executive.

The new National Student Council executive members, as a unit, intend to meet their mandate and make significant moves to impact their student body positively during their tenure by addressing the very pertinent student issues and concerns presented.

  1. This is a promising executive. A warning to all: Please do not allow yourself to be swayed by politicians who may try to use you to fulfil their mandates (both in opposition and in government) as has been the case with so many former executive members of the NYC.

Be objective and, to gain the respect of the youth of the country, be fair and neutral.
