The Ministry of Physical Development, Housing and Urban Renewal plans to continue with a survey to obtain public opinion on the development of multi-family housing in Saint Lucia.

The ministry said the initiative is important given the limited availability of land space on the island as well as anticipated population growth.

In addition, the ministry plans to conduct an internal review of land development processes and regulations as it moves to improve the housing situation in Saint Lucia.

Chief Housing and Urban Renewal Officer Jenny Daniel said: “The survey has partially commenced in that we have gone out and we have done empirical research in terms of the demand for housing in Saint Lucia. We intend to continue this during the latter part of September and October in terms of getting a more qualitative analysis of person’s experience within multi-family housing units because we already have those in Saint Lucia. In terms of the review of the regulations it is anticipated that this will commence during the month of September.”

Last year a National Housing Policy was approved. That policy encourages the development of multi-family housing.
