A motorcyclist was shot by police on Monday morning after the motorcycle operator fled from an off duty police officer, who went after him for hitting his vehicle.

The incident happened at Paix Bouche, Babonneau around 11:45 a.m Monday (Nov.14).

The motorcyclist has been identified as a Babonneau resident by the name of Rick Sebastien.

Reports are that Sebastien refused to stop after hitting the officer’s vehicle. The officer pursued the motorcycle operator and reportedly gave him several warnings during the chase.

After several minutes had passed and the motorcycle was still proceeding, the officer pulled out his firearm and discharged one round, hitting Sebastien in the leg.

This caused him to stop immediately and hand over the motorcycle.

He was later transported to hospital for treatment.

  1. I am not saying that the officer was right or wrong, however some balance needs to be injected into such arguments. Whether you support the police actions or not, the law places that responsibility on officers that they are to be identifiable. It also makes fleeing the scene of an accident illegal.

A resulting scenario of an officer not being identifiable is one that may cause someone involved in an accident to believe that he was being pursued by an armed individual who was upset at the fact that someone had hit his vehicle. Therefore it was necessary for him to preserve his life by fleeing.

However, the off-duty officer may also be within his right to act in preventing the escape of someone who had committed an offence. The only mitigating factor may be that of reasonable force in securing the arrest. That is left for the court to decide. Note that words used and actions taken can have all determine that in the particular circumstance.
