Mother seeks justice for son hit by car

Jason Leo being transported to the hospital on the day of the accident.

The mother of a 14-year-old male student of the Castries Comprehensive Secondary School wants justice for her son, who was hit by a vehicle over one month ago.

Christine Calendar told St. Lucia News Online (SNO) that her son, Jason Leo, has been suffering from severe headaches since the June 2 accident.

She believes the accident is the cause of her son’s headaches after he sustained a concussion during the incident.

Calendar recalled that Jason had just gotten off a bus in La Toc, Castries and was about to cross the road to enter their yard, when he was hit by the vehicle.

The distraught mother said she wasn’t at home at the time of the accident, but an eyewitness called and summoned her to the scene.

“I reached on the scene before the driver made an escape. The ambulance was already on scene and was aiding to my son,” she explained.

Calendar told SNO that she asked for the individual responsible for the accident and the driver of the vehicle identified himself and gave her his contact number.

“I then had to leave the scene with the ambulance, to go to the hospital with my son. Hours later the police came to the hospital, took a statement from my son, left and never returned or called. My son was discharged from the hospital the same night,” she stated.

After realising that no one was calling her back, she decided to make a call on June 8, to the police officer who took the statement, who according to her, made an effort to assist them.

She said, “He asked me to bring my son to the station the next day. He took another statement and brought myself and my son back to the scene to mark the spots again. After that he said he would call, but even up to a day like today, he never called us back to say anything.”

Calendar said ever since the accident, she has had to take her son to a doctor on several occasions, because of the constant headaches. To make matters worse, Jason’s heart rate keeps dropping every time the headache occurs.

“My son never missed a day at school, but because of the accident, he missed out on school for a long time. When I told the man about my son’s headaches and said that I needed to do a scan, he said to me, ‘Everybody has headaches’ as if it was nothing,” she told SNO.

The frustrated mother said she was not aware that she needed to lodge an official report with the Central Police Station, because she thought that was being handled by the traffic police.

Calendar said she has contacted a lawyer to advise her on the way forward.

  1. Make a formal report to the Police. Then take that report to the insurance Company where the vehicle is insured. They will cover all medical expenses. Very straight forward. He will need an MRI of the head and perhaps one of the chest. Seems like quite a bit is going on internally. Please get that done ASAP.

  2. The case was already reported and filed with the police. After several witnesses and a full investigation was conducted, the cause of accident was determined to be negligence from crossing the road. The driver has made several attempts to make sure the boy was okay including calling the hospital several times.

This is a case of wanting to get money out of someone because of their status.

  4. What! What I'm I seeing there, the damage of the vehicle you telling me the driver nor the police want to do anything, I'm telling you that driver would have to buy a new vehicle because after I damage every tyre and window, I would burn it again, then they would say I mad.

  5. I don't think this accident is about whether the boy was wrong. The driver should at least report the accident to his insurance so that the child can be compensated for his injuries.Or at least check on the child to see how he is doing.
I remembered my dad knocked a child who just dashed in front of his vehicle. The child was wrong, but my dad did every thing to help that parent.

    • But if the driver isn't wrong why shoukd he reoort the incident? If he isn't at fault he cant be liable! Pedestrians should be more careful, there is a reason why jaywalking is a crime, cause the roads are for vehicles, not pedestrians

  7. This is always the case with some of those heartless drivers.. They feel the can do anything on the road and they are always right because almost all the traffic officers most times are the best partner. My lady keep fingers crossed, have your lawyer to help u out with this matter and I pray to god your son gets justice and gets better.. Don't give up.. Its time we make examples of these ppl.. Be strong.

  8. The driver of the vehicle, by now should have made a move and also the police. Reason the vehicle is covered under insurance so with the supporting police report a formal claim should have been made on the boy's behalf towards the insurance. I can guarantee you 100% that the car is already repaired. I wonder why?????? If the driver actually cared about human life ,in sure he has family and children, then he would see to it that this boy got all the necessary care he deserved and also follow up on the insurance claim.................
Mr driver I know you are reading this do what is right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!or else>>>>>>>

  10. The driver never tried to leave the scene and was there throughout. Her son crossed the road without looking and that's why he got hit.you cant just cross from infront of the bus and expect the driver to see you when he is climbing the hill. I feel for the young man but he was careless. When u find out whom the driver was you will see why she coming out with this story now.

  11. St.Lucia is the only country where someone is killed and hit by a motorist and nothing happens to them.

How can a civilized society exist or even understand the need for accountability and personal responsibility when no one accounts for this?

I can remember four children were killed in Gros-Islet by a truck driver and nothing was done.
There was absolutely no accountability and justice to those precious souls.

A lawless country can never progress.
And indiscipline and rampant societal disorder is the way of life.
