They gave the first example of this on Friday night when they arrested a 27-year-old woman who allegedly abandoned her three-year-old son during Kiddies Carnival activities in Siparia.
Siparia police allege that they were on mobile patrol around 7.15 pm when they saw the child in the middle of the roadway crying. The officers approached the child and asked him his name, his parents’ names and his address but he could not provide this information.
The officers then south the help of people who were nearby in an attempt to locate the child’s parent but this too was unsuccessful. The officers then took the boy to the Siparia station.
Half an hour later, a woman went into the station and identified the child as being her son. However, she claimed she left him in the care of his grandmother for five minutes. Officers told the woman of the circumstances under which the child was found and of the offence of exposing a child to danger. She was then arrested, charged and the boy subsequently handed over to his father.
