Montoute called upon to break silence on Dolphin Park

Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute

(PRESS RELEASE VIA SNO) – Fearing that the government of St. Lucia will proceed with its plans to construct a dolphinarium at Pigeon Point without any public consultation with the people of Gros Islet and the nation at large, the leader of the Lucian People’s Movement, Therold Prudent, is issuing a plea to Mr. Lenard “Spider” Montoute to explain to his constituents where he stands on this issue.

Moreover, given the local sensitivities involved in the 1973 construction of the causeway, which culminated in the near destruction of Gros Islet’s once thriving fishing industry, Mr. Prudent states that “Mr. Montoute’s failure to take a public position on the matter is a cause for serious concern.”

He further states that, during and after the construction of the causeway, “Mr. Montoute was among a growing number of youth from Gros Islet who, for many years, curtailed their politics to vehemently oppose Sir John Compton and the United Workers Party based on public sentiment that the reckless actions of his government had done irreparable damage to the ecological system in and around the waters of Gros Islet.”

Therefore, “to think that today, Mr. Montoute is now a part of the very same political organisation he once opposed, and to which he once ascribed blame for Gros Islet’s ecological disruption and the economic deprivation of its people, but has refused to stand up to his prime minister is unfathomable.”

In the execution of his responsibilities to the people of Gros Islet as their district representative, Mr. Prudent states that “Mr. Montoute must be reminded that he was given the very rare opportunity of returning to St. Lucia’s parliament in 2016 on the premise that he would safeguard the interests of his constituents and not capitulate to any special interest nor foreign corporate powers whose proposals or so-called investments are adverse to the well-being of the people of Gros Islet and are designed to benefit only a few.”

Finally, in case Mr. Montoute cares little about the implications of his silence, Mr. Prudent has provided the following information in hopes that he will finally awaken from his slumber.

It is a fact that the proposed dolphinarium will:

A) Destroy the remaining coral reefs, which the great Jacques Cousteau described as “having a similar formation” to that of the Great Barrier Reef after he dove off the coast of Pigeon Island in the early 1970s during his visit to St. Lucia;

B) Result in the deposit of large amounts of faecal matter along the Gros Islet waterfront and the surrounding beaches due to the current in and around that area and its constant movement towards the shore;

C) Increase the chances of residents and visitors contracting rashes and skin-related diseases due, in part, to the polluted waters of Gros Islet;

D) Create very few jobs, which will not make a significant dent in the unemployment situation facing Gros Islet and the nation;

E) Attract sharks, thus making the entire bay a dangerous location for sea baths;

F) Destroy the remaining fish population; and

G) Cause our nation to be further blacklisted for engaging in inhumane practices that are adverse to the protection of mammals and other animals.

  1. Chastanet have to realise that in order to be successful in this game in the long term, he cannot allow anyone including his own father's old dreams that dont make no sense, to affect his standings. parents or not, some of them do this to their kids even without realising it. this is your kid. he/she is not the means to achieving your ends, your goals, your dreams. chastanet senior's role is not to accomplish his vision through his son when he know damn well that the people will not like it. Chastanet junior now has to look at his father and say, protecting my stay in this game for the long haul is more important than your dreams papa. so i will respectfully have to say no. you gotta be Machiavelli boy.

    • Creaty, very nicely stated.

      Much respect to Michael C. He started with minimal means and worked very, very hard to become one of St. Lucia's old-school titans. He has typically run, proverbially, "below the radar screen" and continues to do so, unlike many of the newer generation that chooses to be conspicuous consumers.

      There had been a concept that he was, allegedly, a proponent of that involved a sea-pen style dolphinarium adjacent to Sandals La Toc on the harbour side.

      That was then. Times have changed. Significantly. Feel free to follow the links in the comments section on http://thevoiceslu.com/2018/02/prudent-calls-montoute-break-silence-dolphin-park

      At that time ('back in the day'), the evidence-based scientific knowledge did not exist. Also, at that time the informed, educated public to which tourism in St. Lucia appeals to did not have the revulsion to confinement of these highly intelligent mammals as they currently do. Again, a different time, and there's nothing wrong with that, that was then.

      As proponents of a St. Lucia that excels not only in economic and sustainable development, but also as a leader in Caricom, the planned dolphinarium places a serious question in front of us:

      --- Does St. Lucia want to be seen as a backwater pariah, an emerging tourist slum similar to the Dominican Republic and areas of mexico that chase the dollars of trashy tourists?

      --- Or, does St. Lucia take the high road, and continue to leverage its very, very solid worldwide brand as a progressive, world-leading, ecologically-progressive upper-end destination of choice.

      God bless.

    • I bet you he's smarter than you and yours looser .

      (2)(2)
      • It all depends on your definition of smart because no one in their right minds would ever describe Montoute being as smart. He is just a man who uses fluff to pull the wool over the eyes of voters. If this is your meaning then he is smart in that sense.

  7. Don't be silly, Spider will be expressing his views at his meeting in The Green Light Youth Club, London on the 03rd March.

    There's no need to express his views to his constituents the important thing is expressing to St Lucians living in London.

    They are the ones that really matter!

  8. This is a tight rope that one has to walk carefully. In this business (tourism) you have to stay competitive, and the way I see it right now St Lucia is in need of a few new attractions. Yes been simply beautiful is not enough alone ; Ok you go to the volcano and hot spring, Gross Islet Friday Nights, the craft market, one or two water falls, ATV's and selfie with the pitons That's not enough, St Lucia is an exotic destination and people would like to do exotic things when they get there and the dolphin park could be one such thing. I have been to the Dolphin Cove in Jamaica in 2012 and 2015 and it's a nice attraction and all the above that minister complaining about I see none of that. If that company is the same one who would like to build a park in St Lucia great I can't speak for nobody else, they seem to be doing and excellent job and the animals were well taken care of and the park and water was pristine. Let's not kid ourselves ; the DHS Project of the proposed magnitude will do a ten thousand times damage to the eco system and wet lands compare to a dolphin park. They have to back fill how much, bulldoze how much, tear down how much , and dig up how much.

  9. Its amazing how hard headed Chastanet is or could it be he just don't think before he think and acts? The global trend with regards these facilities is their CLOSURE. In the united states and in France this form of entertainment is rapidly losing popularity with the public. This being the case why is this JA spending tax payers money and destroying historically significant sites to build dolphinarium whose shelf life is already numbered even before it is constructed.

    Any way who will patronize this facility locals or foreign tourists? I want him to tell St lucians who this facility is for.
