Ministry of Health launches immunisation booklet

On Tuesday, July 7, 2014 the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Human Services and Gender Relations launched an Immunisation Booklet geared at empowering the general public in particular parents on the importance of immunisation.

Immunisation is an important and effective way to reduce childhood illnesses and death. However some children are not immunised owing to parents:

*Not knowing why immunisation is important

* Lack of understanding as to when to get their children immunised

* Disagreeing to immunisation as a public health measure

* Or have concerns about vaccine safety

  1. I think that the effort to educate parents and guardians about St.Lucia's immunization schedule is commendable - though overdue. We must understand that lack of compliance is often attributable to lack of information.

Since it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health (MoH) to reduce Immunization Illiteracy, then it must also explore effective channels for dissemination of information. There are a finite number of booklets, and some of the parents will either not read all or misplace them - before the childhood vaccines are completed. I certainly hope that the books were pilot tested using parents from varied backgrounds. Simplified refrigerator charts may be cheaper (less paper) and more effective in the long run.

The Immunization schedule needs to be made available - with other MoH information - on a webpage where it can be accessed at any time, from any location and device. The information certainly should not all be in print – videos explaining the catch-up dates, vaccine safety, etc. should be made.

And if the MoH really wants to ‘reduce disparities by increasing access ‘then it should seek funding to create an App which will remind parents/guardians who sign up on the immunization and catch-up dates given their input of information. This 2014 and a hard copy booklet targeting (mostly young ) parents is not that relevant.

Good, better best. Do not rest until your good is better, and your better best. The problem of access has bot been completely addressed.
