“Minister, when will the crime lab be reopened?” – UnitedPac

2c4d3330-7fa9-4cb0-897d-d269456dc47bPRESS RELEASE – This week alone three matters have come to the news involving rape.

One involving a policeman, another where a woman was allegedly raped in the privacy of her residence and now a young girl a victim of the act whilst at work. All three acts must have been a horrendous experience to the victims. The reports are that crimes of sexual assault and rape have been on the increase.

Citizens will remember the recent cases of the two young schoolgirls in the Reduit area and the elderly grandmother in Micoud who were subjected to such extreme violence.

With all the excuses Mr. La Corbinere has been giving for the lack of resources and poor state of operations under our national security, we now read in a weekend newspaper a report bybMicah George quoting Acting Commissioner Alexander as describing the problems of investigating serious crimes with a closed down crime laboratory. Alexander says that results from forty-two samples are still being awaited from overseas. That in it self must amount to a lot of work the police have to send overseas whilst our lab remains closed. He also laments the situation is so grave that persons arrested have to be released pending the arrival of results and which in itself is cause for even more concern.

So while the public is being asked to cooperate with the police by way of providing information, success will come not only from that, but the kind of evidence required to stand up in a court. How then will our police officers be able to solve rapes and murders and other serious crimes? Already we are not sure as to the level of victim counseling girls and women are receiving and if that occurs in all cases.

Like others concerned, again we ask Minister LaCorbiniere, when will the crime lab be reopened after being closed for so long? Is it due to a lack of staff, money, resources or someone to run the lab or maybe it is not a priority. When will results of tests sent overseas finally arrive in St. Lucia and how much will it cost taxpayers? Is it that to get answers and action we must go through the channels of the European Ambassadors, as it is quite apparent that the voices of St. Lucians do not seem to matter much?

  1. This man always looking furious in an article. He has a doctorate and cant do any thing relating to police affairs nor state security issues. Really worthless ministerial leader.

  2. They are waiting for Juffali's to gift us the diabetic research center hopefully sometime this year, according to Alvina. THEY WILL TELL US THAT It will be the first priorty after the next elections. I HATE TO SAY SO BUT KENNY IS A POOR LEADER HE DOESN'T HAVE A DISCERNING EYE FOR TALENT OR FOR SKILL. HE IS ALWAYS TRYING TO PUT SQUARE PEGS IN ROYND HOLRS THUS HE HAS A BUNCH OF FAILURES AROUND HIM.

  3. The minister said in November last year :
“We are working towards starting a fairly detailed approach to operationalising the forensic lab within the next month”

What month are we now in again? Is that a case of "Lying La Corbs?" You people always look for excuses for incompetence. If that was a no name person he would have been labelled all kind of names.

  4. Alien what are you implying? That St. Lucians don't posses the qualifications? What planet do you come from. Personally i know about 6 who are qualified not to mention those i know nothing of. Who do you think you fooling.

The lab's closure had nothing to do with expertise. Please track back the reasons given by the Minister. Don't look for excuses for an incompetent individual. La Corbiniere represents the mere essence of what it means to be a failure. I think he should be brought to and displayed at our schools and learning institutions as an example of an abject failure and showing them what not to become in life. Only then he would be deserving of a salary paid by taxpayers.

  5. I have known Philip LaCorbiniere for many years now but never known him for being successful at anything and that goes way back to his days at St.Marys college. I don't even think he was successful at O'levels. How he got to law school? I don't know.

Philip has had three tries at management within the justice system with no success to his credit. That's why I question Kenny Anthony's obsession with Philip LaCorbiniere. Is it worth compromising the security of the entire citizenry just to fulfill a promise to reward C?

No I don't think it's worth it. Neither Kenny nor Lacorbs should be trusted with the security of the country. Lacorbs is grossly incompetent and Kenny is void of good and sound judgment for putting LaCorbs in that post in the first place.

A couple of nights ago I heard him in the media trying to stirrup trouble again by threatening Mr. Allen Chastenet and supporters of the UWP, I was amazed with his tone. I remember a gun totted politician pulled a loaded firearm on some unsuspecting residents of Grass Street during a by-election a few years ago ?

I am advising the PM to take this request very seriously.

  6. THE CRIME LAB WILL BE OPENED, when there are professional lab techs to work in the LAB! DUHHHH. Remember the job requires being able to collect proper evidence such as semen, saliva etc. Preserve that evidence, test that evidence, find a match for the evidence and then document the evidence in a crime database in order to have a genetic profile.

Therefore, all you youngsters out there should go seek a degree in FORENSIC LAB TECHNICIAN, may be you can help St.lucia in the process. Oh and just so you know,

    • I have a Masters degree in Forensic Science and I have been applying for a job for 2 years now and all I have heard is that they are not hiring Forensic scientist but persons with natural science studies from Sir Arthur. I know of another young man who has a first class honours degree in Forensic Science. He too had been told the same. So it's not a matter of not having qualified people persons it's just that a lab is not a priority until crime hits close to home and someone in position is personally affected.
