Agriculture Minister Mosses Jn Baptiste said he is saddened by the unfortunate death of a man whose body was discovered hours after it was swept away in a river in Odsan/Cul De Sac on Friday, Nov. 6.
The minister said it was a very unfortunate incident, but noted that it is not something that happens regularly.
However, he said it serves as a reminder that cattle farmers should always pay attention to weather updates.
Jn Baptiste advised that in cases of heavy rains and storms, farmers should make immediate preparations to do whatever is necessary to protect their crops, but also move to safety.
He also expressed condolences to the man’s family who resides within his constituency – Vieux Fort North, stating: “We are in mourning.”
Cletus Estephane, 39, died while trying to save a cow, according to relatives.
The cow, and another man who was assisting Estephane to rescue the animal, reportedly survived, but he was swept away in the river.
The Police Marine Unit retrieved Estephane’s body on Saturday, November 7.
