The youth of our community are often bombarded with images and value systems that are sometimes contrary to the established norms and values of our society. To counteract this possible negative trend the Parliamentary Representative for Micoud North, Hon. Dr. Gale T C Rigobert has initiated the establishment of the 11+ Youth Club with the motto “Empowering Youth to Conquer the World”.
The Club seeks to encourage positive involvement in community building, self empowerment and the development of softer skills.
The 11+ Youth Club today concludes its first summer camp which ran from August 6 -17. The two-week summer camp helped the youth to expand their knowledge and strengthen their understanding of the dos and don’ts of life.
The participants were exposed to such areas as etiquette; conflict resolution, mediation, anger management; drug and alcohol awareness; dance; drama; developing good money habits, such as saving; upholding the law; responding to physical and emotional abuse; climate change and maintaining good hygiene. Facilitators were drawn from within and outside the community, and included local musicians and artistes, experts from the Royal St. Lucia Police, a dance expert from the St. Lucia Cultural Development Foundation (CDF) and officials from The Ministry of Physical Development Environment and Housing, Department of Sustainable Development.
Approximately seventy (70) students participated in the summer camp ranging from 11-16 years old. Some of the highlights of the camp included the naming and sign posting of streets in the Micoud Village; and the erection of garbage bins throughout the community. The students were challenged to write their own pledge and the winner will be revealed at the graduation ceremony.
The graduation ceremony is carded for 26th August 2012 and will be held at the Patience Combined School from 3:00 – 6:00pm. The ceremony will mark the conclusion of the summer camp. It will also signal the formal launch of the 11+ Youth Club and the induction of new members.
The MP for Micoud North Hon. Dr. Gale T C Rigobert would like to thank all those who partnered with the 11+ Youth Club to make the camp a success, including the SSDF, the Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Shawn Edwards, the Private Sector, and the parents who donated foodstuff and volunteered as care takers and facilitators for the duration of the camp.
All parents, guardians and well wishers are invited to join the youth as they celebrate the inauguration of the 11+ Youth Club and the conclusion of their first summer Camp, on Sunday 26th August 2012, at the Patience Combined School from 3:00 – 6:00pm.
