In response to the several cries of hopelessness from the unemployed, Member of Parliament for Micoud North Dr Gale Rigobert in collaboration with private and public sector agencies, will be hosting a ‘Career Fair’ on Friday, November 6, at the Micoud RC Church Ground.

Dr. Rigobert told St. Lucia News Online, “Too very often job seekers are fully aware of what potential employers are looking for. Apart from formal academic qualifications, increasingly other skills, classified as soft skills, can prove to be the determining factor, as to whether or not an employer would hire someone.”

While it is acknowledged that the St. Lucian economy is contracting and that job opportunities appear to be shrinking, Dr. Rigobert is hoping that a job fair of this nature can better prepare school leavers, job hunters, and students currently at secondary and tertiary education institutions, to avail themselves of whatever opportunities are available.

Dr Rigobert is also appealing to unemployed youth in Micoud North and environs to capitalize on this rare opportunity, to simultaneously engage with employers and to gain a better or deeper understanding of what the job market requires.

Participating agencies for the job fair include: the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), Saint Lucia Fire Service (SLFS), Mampa Employment Agency, Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA), St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC), Water and Sewerage Company Inc (WASCO) and various agencies from the medical sector, among others.

The career fair starts at 10:00 a.m. and will include various presentations. The attendees will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions and to meet with representatives from the partcipating agencies.

  2. Are these companies actually hiring? There is no point in having a career fair if the companies have no intention to hire. How many jobs will be available? What are the targeted skills if any in demand for these companies? If it is just a bunch of presentations of "This is what we as a company do" then it is not useful to us. We want jobs.

    • well u cant fink just like that hmm, this also presents an opportunity to do great networking. yes some may not be hiring now, but if ure presentable, respectful, and show ur ambition through eloquence, they will be sure to remember you and ull def be first in line when they have a position opened. this is especially great for students who can inquire about internships, or just volunteering opportunities to gain experience. ud be surprised how many employers wud rather hire a person based on 1st impressions rather than taking 1 hour to interview plenty ppl. the same happened to me, i attend these events, no one hired, but when a position opened, my boss snatched me up one time and hired me via email w/out any interview.

wat im not pleased about is the timing; this needed to be advertised a week in adv so that determined ppl can have time fix their resumes/cv. i only heard of this today, but hopefully sno is not the only media outlet they have reached out too.
