PRESS RELEASE – On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Saint Lucians and friends of the Diaspora will gather in New York City to pay tribute to renowned Saint Lucian Poet, Playwright, Artist, and 1992 Nobel Laureate in Literature, the late Sir Derek Walcott.
Sir Derek died in Saint Lucia on March 17, 2017 at the age of 87, and was laid to rest on March 25. This homage to his life and his accomplishments, titled “A Celebration of Sir Derek Walcott” will take place at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 331 Hawthorne Street, in Brooklyn, New York, starting at 3:00 PM.
His Excellency Cosmos Richardson, Saint Lucia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will lead a host of dignitaries, friends and associates, and members of the literary arts community in this salute to one of the island’s brightest talents. The event will also feature music, poetry, and dance performances.
All are welcome to attend this ceremony, and pay their respects to Sir Derek Walcott’s unparalleled contributions to Saint Lucian culture.
