Filamena Day, a Castries-born 22-year-old medical student who is currently studying in Cuba, will compete in the Miss Caribbean Culture Queen Pageant on behalf of St Lucia on Monday, August 5, 2013 in Charlestown, Nevis.
Day believes she stands a good chance of bringing home the crown as she goes against 11 other contestants hailing from various Caribbean islands.
She has been rehearsing for the pageant and said it is something she has been looking forward to since after viewing a live internet stream of the event in 2011. St Lucia’s Oneka Mckoy participated at that show.
Day got into the pageant through Lady J Pageants, who does auditions for contestants.
Described as a confident young woman who is always searching for a new challenge, Day is somewhat experienced in the field of pageantry. She has won the Miss Teen La Clery and was the third runner-up at the 2010 Miss Independence pageant.
The medical student also captured the first runner-up spot and best interview award at the 2010 National Carnival Queen show. She was also crowned the 2012 Miss Caribbean Cuba.
The Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant is reportedly becoming a tougher competition every year. According to Janice Barrow Dupal of Lady J Pageants Coaching & Consulting, the evening gowns look more exquisite and the swimwear designs are “outrageously creative”.
“But the young ladies showcase the best in their talent, beauty, intelligence and good showmanship [and] in the end one prevails. We are hoping Filamena will come out on top with a fantastic performance in all segments,” she said.
St. Lucians are being asked to log onto the Miss Caribbean Culture Facebook page to vote for Day for Ms. Photogenic.
Other contestants are Faydeha King of Guyana, Jenelle Thongs of Trinidad & Tobago, Jurnalis Henson of Curacao, Karla Gellizeau of St.Vincent and The Grenadines, Leslassa Amour-Shillingford of Dominica, Kadija Furlonge of Montserrat, Taitu Goodwin of Anguilla, A’Jada Delana Burke of St. Croix, Rosa Martinez of the Dominican Republic, Zinga Imo of St.Kitts and Denesia Smithen of Nevis.
The event can be viewed live on on liveIslands.net for a special advance purchase price of US$5, or US$13 for residents of St. Kitts and Nevis (living in St.Kitts /Nevis).
