The Saint Lucia Athletics Association has officially announced Mechaela Judia Hyacinth as the island’s sole representative at this year’s International Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia.
The ninth edition of the competition for athletes under the age of 18, WYC Cali 2015 will take place 15-19 July. Mechaela, a member of Blazers Track Club and a student at Leon Hess Comprehensive, will contest the women’s 100m.
Mechaela has done well in her event over the past two years. She won the youth division at the National Individual Championships last month with a career-best 11.54 seconds, albeit with a trailing wind of over three metres per second.
Her best legal time also came this year, when she ran 11.96 seconds at a meet in Martinique in May. It was her first time under 12 seconds, and that run earned her a qualifying mark under the standards set out by the IAAF for WYC 2015.
Mecheala has not featured a great deal for the year, but she is unbeaten, having also won at the Inter-School Championships (12.3) and the Elite Invitational (12.5).
Last season, Mecheala ran 12.15 seconds at the Independence Championships, 12.20 at National Juniors, 12.16 at the Hampton Games in Trinidad and Tobago, and 12.22 at the CARIFTA Games in Fort de France, Martinique.
According to a statement from the Athletics Association, Mechaela “has displayed confidence and readiness for the challenge ahead… We wish Ms Hyacinth all the best in Colombia.” Mecheala will travel with her club coach, Gimry Lewis, on Sunday.
