POLICE PRESS RELEASE – About 10:15 a.m. on Monday, June 16, 2014, officers attached to the Vieux Fort Police Station responded to a report of a suspected mental health challenged male causing a disturbance at La Ressource, Vieux Fort.

Upon arrival on the scene, officers encountered a male behaving erratically. On approaching the suspect, the officers observed him picked up two stones, one in either hands, and threatened them with it.

The officers responded by calling on him to put down the offensive objects, he refused and continued advancing towards them. The police again called upon him to stop but still he did not heed the warnings of the officers.

At that point, the officers discharged two non-lethal rounds of ammunition in his direction in an effort to subdue him. It was only when this failed that the police discharged a weapon containing regular ammunition, which hit him in the process.

This individual who was later identified as 51-year-old Simon Gabriel of La Ressource, Vieux Fort.

Gabriel was transported to St. Judes’ Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into this matter has commenced.

  2. so hwo everybody say is 3 shot alone fired...but yall the police sayin now how 2 non lethal shots were first fired b4 then live ammunition was used.

but if the police were told the man in mentally unstable....what can 2 rocks do to the police. and y not shoot him in the leg/foot...y shoot him in his mid region.

awa I hope a proper investigation is done. but is police investigating police...so the truth will never get out and those damn police will continue to handle situations carelessly.

  3. I've sat here and read a ton of comments (most of them crticizing the police and how they operate) right now everyone is upset saying of he only had 2 stones and he wouldn't use it cause he wasn't that type of guy. It was clear that he was mentally unstable who's to say thaton this ooccasion he wouldn't have. Who's to say on that day he was pretty off. Cause I don't think the police were called in because he was skipping and being merry. For the "ignorant" ppl saying it was just 2 stones- 2 stones are classified as weapons. What if he had use these 2 stones against a child or a passerby. What if he had hit on on the police officers with a stone what then. We Lucians are quick to judge and point fingers and not think but just pass blame around. I believe that while the situation could have been handled differently none of us were there and actually knew what these officers encountered with this man.

  4. Never under estimate a mentally challenge person.a rock can be a deadly weapon. Scenario 1. For all these people condemning the police officer.put yourself in their place. A mentally challenge person comming after you with two rocks and mabe u have a cutlass wat would u do? Metally challenge people very unstable.when u think u know them as these nice cool and collective person one day they can erupt like a dormant volcanoe

  5. and the best part about this is that .... if the police officer was the one who died.... this story would barely have comments.. or maybe it would have... but they would be a different story altogether.

  6. why u all always blame the police police are not super men. Why the family did not handle their problem themselves? because the man was to violent. Even though u all see he is always calm that does not mean on that he was calm. Why u all did not prevent him from using the drugs. Give the police the right tool to do their work or else handle u all problems.

  9. Persons judge without hearing the side of the story. I am not for either one of them, but if you were not there do not post nonsense!!!! Why don't you pray for our country or the family of the deceased. Instead y'all criticize the police for their actions, what if his intentions were harming the police? Do not cast judgement if you were not there!!! RIP

    • in our modern day age of tasers, tranquilizers rubber bullets & proper shooting techniques you guys stil praise the police for doing a good job. A mentally challenged man armed with two stones. Well st.lucians stay in your abyss.

  10. So who burying him now?? The police had to protect themselves... it happens all over the world, so why condemn the police force... Great job officers!!

    • to protect yourselves from two stones you murder somebody! wow! what about the use of tasers, tranqilizers, rubber bullets or aiming for less vital areas with smaller calibers, if thats great policing then i can understand why the U.S.A judges them for extra judicial killings

  11. Apparently the guy create propblems when he is at home. On many occassions before the family would call the police to take him for his injection. This happened many time before. he never confronted the police before. He would usually go with them peacefully. This time he resisted. He did not confront but fake the police with the stone. The report is not giving the full story and the many witnesses who were there should be interviewed. I think the police was being ruthless and trigger happy.

    • thats them, i wouldn't doubt the case, i know makambou & i know viexfort poilce or st.lucian police in general

      (0)(0)

    • Fake the police.... hello in this day and age.. you do not fake anything. what do you think? what's wrong with your reasoning.. if you know someone is armed and is after you and you see them reaching for their firearm. will you say they're faking you? oh plz give me a break

  12. don't know the circumstances but i knew makambou and two stones is nothing for the police to kill the guy, these trigger happy thugs in st.lucia in this modern time could have used a taser or rubber bullets, this is not the first case of police murdering mentally disturbed people! damn! i wish whatever was causing makambou to act the way he was jump into the soul of the trigger happy coldbloooded pig

  13. You know something, the problem is us (as a people) who refuse to do the right thing when it comes to situations like these.

We refuse to use proper guidelines in such situations. And we know there are alternatives that can be used to prevent the loss of lives. But we just don't give a damn.

Our priorities are shifted in nonsense areas that we do not need (like having stupid consultants) who bring and do nothing for our advancement, paying them ridiculously high salaries, whilst neglecting the POLICE by not giving the the proper tools and equipment to FUNCTION IN A HUMANE

  14. THIS GUY WAS ALWAYS SEEN JUMPING AROUND HAPPILY ON HIS OWN BUSINESS AROUND VF. ALWAYS AT ILPIRATA BEACH OR SANDY BEACH ENJOYING THE SURROUNDINGS. COMPLETEY DISTRAUGHT TO SAY THE LEAST.

The police could have comprehend Simon in a more appropriate manner. The use of a firearm was unnecessary and these police should have known better.

They need to start treating civilians with the due respect and stop abusing their "authority".

    • should have understood him in a more appropriate manner? again, we speak to situations we don't have a clue about. you should have been the police officer, lets see how you would have handled the situation.. too quick to judge
