St Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) is a sponsor of the National Inter-School Tennis Tournament that will be held from November 11-16, 2013.
This is the second consecutive year LUCELEC is supporting the competition between primary, secondary and tertiary institutions on the island. It is organised by the St Lucia Tennis Association.
LUCELEC is contributing $7,000 to the 2013 tournament — an increase of $2,000 over its sponsorship in 2012. The funds will be used to cover tournament costs and prizes.
Speaking at the cheque handover ceremony on Thursday, LUCELEC Corporate Communications Assistant Bernardia Regis made reference to LUCELEC’s overall support of school sports which includes a three year, $150,000, covenant with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
“LUCELEC’s support for the National School’s Tennis Tournament complements its support for the Inter-Secondary School Sports Programme as a catalyst for the total development of student athletes as Saint Lucia looks ahead to hosting the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017 and for the holistic development of our youth to instil valuable social and life skills,” said Regis.
The tennis tournament is designed to create awareness of and build a foundation for the sport. Last year 240 students competed in the tournament expected to attract more participants in 2013.
Organisers are especially pleased the tournament has brought a competitive element in schools that have not traditionally played tennis. They also envision it will one day produce tennis players who will represent Saint Lucia on the regional and international level.
