LETTER: Stressed nurse speaks out over patient treatment at VH
Victoria Hospital
Victoria Hospital

I am a nurse and I am saddened and feels so depressed to see what’s going on at Victoria Hospital as it relates to the waiting time before one gets to see a medical doctor.

Again we shouldn’t blame Victoria Hospital and its staff because the limited staff can only do so much, and can’t assist everyone, although the staff try their best.

People have to sit at the hospital, sometimes from 7:30 p.m. until the next day without being seen. That is frustrating. Patient care is compromised, staff are stressed out, burned out, even a bit disoriented at times because of the many questions one have to be answering daily.

How can  a general hospital have one doctor working the midnight shift? Is this not a curse? Who is to be blamed?

The patients tend to curse the nurses and doctors. I understand their frustration but they themselves don’t understand that it’s the Ministry of Health that  is responsible for health and employment of staff. Nurses and doctors who try their best to help get stoned, kicked and even spat on whereas government getting high praises.

At the end of a grave yard shift I go home both happy and sad. Happy that I did my best but sad because of the ‘leftovers’ who never get to be seen.

  2. To "Disgusted" i want to say this:
I no longer work at VH because I saw this coming. I mean the deplorable state that nurses work under but let me say this to you. It is also because of people like you that those nurses act in such a frustrated manner. When one works in such a deplorable and broken system, trying to save the lives of ungrateful people like you only to be battered and abused verbally and even pphysically it is hard and heart breaking g. Have you tried asking the nurses how they feel? You expect them to be concerned about you but they deserve to be respected too. They are human beings too. In fact, human beings with no voice as medical personnel because they get bashed in the media all the time and cannot defend themselves because of the nature of the job they do. Trying showing some respect for a change because those are the same folks who wipe your backside when you are on that hospital bed. Try being nice to them and maybe they just be nice right back. Just saying...

  3. I CAN SAY FOR A FACT THAT I HAVE MET A NICE NURSE WHEN I WENT TO GIVE BIRTH TO MY SON AND SHE WAS NOT CATHOLIC.AS THE SAYING GOES GOOD THINGS DOES NOT LAST.SOME OF THOSE NURSES ARE PIGS ,THEY SPEAK HARSLY TO THE PATIENTS.i THOUGHT THE PROFESSION OF NURSING CAME OUT OF FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE WHO WANTED TO TAKE CARE OF THE SICK.AT THAT ERA WAS THERE ALL THOSE TYPES OF MEDICINES.
MOST OF THEM HAVE BEHAVE IN A MANNNER THAT YOU WOULD WANT SEND THEM TO BOKO HARAM.SO THIS IS THEIR PAYBACK BUT WE HAVE TO PAY FOR IT TOO.
HOW MANY NURSES HAVE MET YOU IN THE WAITING ROOM AND HAVE ASKED IF YOU ARE OKAY, HOW CAN I HELPETC. VERY FEW.I CANNOT SYMPAPTHIZE WITH THEM.SO MANY AGENCIES LEAVE THEIR FAMILIES BEHING TO GO INTO IMPOVERISHED COUNTRIES AFICAC.WAR ZONE TO DO GOOD TO HELP.
WILL I STOP THE BASHIONG.NO NOT UNTIL THEY GO TO THE EXTRE MILE AND WHEN THE PUBLIC WILL SAY NICE THINGS ABOOUT NURSES.BE NICE,PATIENT.COMPASSIONATE. TOLERANT AND THEY MUST REMEMBER THE OATH THAT THEY TOOK.

  4. If you have not worked as a nurse, then you cannot relate to what nurses go thru on a daily basis.Nurse work so hard sometimes no time to eat or go to the bathroom,in addition to the insults from angry patients/families. Kenny and Alvina ougt to be in the waiting room with chest pains and they would understand-maybe they would change the system. one doctor is ridiculous-no wonder people are dying.someone needs to sue the minisry of health to send a clear message to the idiots . and yes-i am a nurse and can relate to the system.its called PATIENT NEGLECT AND ABANDOMEMENT.
Kenny ans Alvina are both stupid and fools. patients and families should start suing them for patient neglect .

  5. The VH problem is a very complicated one. As a past VH nurse, it is sad that things seem to be getting worse instead of getting better. Those issues are not new; it is just that no one seem to care because medical personnel never speak up. The system is broken and is in need of desperate overhauling. Nurses are stressed out, over worked, unappreciated by the public, mistreated by administration, and belittled by doctors themselves. It is time to explore new ways to do things. I is time to keep up with the rest odmf the world. Stop seeing ourselves a small island people. Additionally, while the government was cutting back on nurses, I wonder whether they started by cutting off on their own big fat salaries. That would have been a very nice place to start. The public also need to realize that health care isn't cheap. We are willing to pay hundreds on carnival costumes, new furniture for the Christmas, expensive cars with all the latest trim, mag rims, heavy stereo sets, and all the latest gadgets not to mention the latest brand name fashion but what about our health??? Our priorities are all wrong yet we expect miracles from the Government t and health care professionals. We are willing to travel abroad for health care because we know the value of good health care. Some of us are willing to even pay top dollar abroad but refuse to pay at home for health care. Lucians it is time to set our priorities straight. Health care isn't cheap, It is not a luxury. The wealth of a nation, depends on the health of it's people. Kudos to the nurse who spoke up now let there not be retaliation as this is a democracy.

  6. I totally agree with the statement and we as a nation need to come together a d put pressure on the ministry of health to improve conditions. Our health care is below mediocre and shouldn't be accepted. I worked at vh years ago and now it saddens me to see the condition, let's forget about party and put pressure on the government.

  7. It is such a shame that our people have to suffer so much. Politician don't care because when they are sick they take the next flight out of the country to get better treatment. I wonder why?

  8. I am so happy that someone spoke out on this matter because the public and relatives are so quick to bash the nurses and doctors but don't understand where the real problems lies. they recently cut the nursing at VH by almost half by sending the sessional nurses home. so instead of 4 nurses on a given shift, there are 2 and you are expected to accomplish the same amount of work. smh. the Govt needs to reassess their priorities.

  9. I think its time we as a nation start thinking for ways in which we can make a difference. Its not helping by listing all the things that are going wrong instead we can acknowledge the weaknesses and find alternatives.

I think they should consider promoting volunteering. In this situation a practicing nurse or doctor could volunteer at that hospital to learn new skills and help out at the same time. There are different was to assist the situation we just need to find the best alternatives and ways to be more proactive.

  12. I believe the doctors, nurses just don't care any more my dad had a major stroke last month was brought to st Jude's after less than 24 hrs was discharged I told the dr my father wasn't looking good enough to b discharged refer him to Victoria so they wld observe him he sd he is good gave a physiotherapy visit for the next month guess what my dad died 5 days later from another stroke brought him v h it was to late...so I honestly think they have given up with poor working conditions and what ever else is affecting them

  13. And we crying about 5% cut.Wait and see if we can open the new general hospital under the present fiscal problem.Where will the money come from .If we want effective and efficient services we must be willing to make sacrifices too,we like too much freeness as a people.Agreed, one doctor in Er is inadequate but you must have money to pay wages for more.

  14. Its time we go an strike for better health care.. we are paying VAT.. making sacrifices and yet suffer endlessly when we are sick.. so what's the use of all those financial sacrifices the government wants us to make..Some can go overseas for better health care.. but the common st.lucian cannot! ITS HIGH TIME WE STRIKE!! WE CANT CONTINUE TO SUFFER IN THIS COUNTRY

    (1)(0)

    • My dear, sorry to be the one to tell you, that it will get worse before it gets better. Go and check St. Lucia's political history. There's a pattern.

      (1)(0)

  15. When lucians learn its about our dear country and not a party then they will be able to accept who really wants to see st.lucia do well....compton may not have been perfect ...and who is anyway...but y'all felt he was in power for too long and wanted him out....but as far as i know this was the best times lucia has had......most big cpuntries recognised and helped us through the same government yall got tiredvof and why. ....beause like i heard some lucians say thirty years is too long. ...put him out.....why...wasn't the party doing well enough...but y'all wanted change .....check who standing by and let criminals do what they want..remember the politians dont know a thing about most of us but we so dye hard. ....my thing is
Lucians keep focused and see and learn what is best for our nation. ....but some of yall still want to see our party. ..our partyyy...our partyyyy in power....i am saddened for my beautiful island where i grew in safety and now what!!! So much yo deal with!! Love oh love myb ou sland home! !!!

  16. Looks like ST. Jude Hospital have some of the same issues even worst. Not even panadol in their Pharmacy sometimes. No monies to buy supplies I am told, Workers frustrated. No appreciation of staff by authorities, Lab test not readily available their machines not working. I understand that KENNY has never come to visits the staff and support them since assuming office. The hospital nothing happening there as such, very little yet still Alvina say January January 2015. Toilets always smelling when ask why, water problem, patients have to bathe in cold water. Get the people out of our sporting area.

    • Thm! What did you think 'labour' meant? Well, here it is: Hardship, pain and s-u-f-f-e-r-i-n-g!

    • kc are you an idiot. That's why politicians are assigned to a ministry. To run government departments.

      (1)(0)

  17. It was about time someone speak out on this matter. We close our eyes to sooooo many things that needs to be addressed in St.Lucia, which is sad. I can feel the pain of this nurse because i have been waiting for about four(4) months to be hired at VH which during this time i have been volunteering there and keep hearing, "the government has your documents and it should be going through" From since Last year October i did the interview and was told i was going to be hired. When people come to the hospital they expect to be attended to immediately and i don't blame them but the hospital is really lacking staff and yet the HR was told DO NOT HIRE BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT CANT AFFORD. sometimes staff sacrifice their lunch and r on their feet the WHOLE day and even go beyond their working hours. sad but true.. Let us stop making excuses for the Government.. HEALTHCARE SUPPOSE TO BE A PRIORITY

    (0)(0)

    • It seems obvious that the priority of this government is to take care of their yard fowls. Listen well! Do you hear anyone of them complaining?

      (0)(0)

  18. Politicians not interested in the duties assigned to them, they are more interested in the responsibilities of a low grade government worker. Lucians on the other are jack asses, they more interested in the rum and party during election season. thats what they voting for. Education and Health should be the # 1 priority of any government and here in saint lucia it is the lowest priority. Both administration has failed the people of this country. SLP and UWP had the chances to fix all these problems. But no parties did nothing. A time bomb is ticking in that country, when it explode everybody have to run. Judicial system, education, health, unemployment, nepotism, corruption, victimization, you name it.
