Below is the text of the letter of condolence transmitted to His Excellency Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, President : Republic of South Africa on the death of former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela from Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, Governor of Saint Lucia.
On behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, I wish to express my sincere condolences to you and the Government and people of the Republic of South Africa on the death of President Nelson Mandela.
We have very fond memories of his visit to Saint Lucia in 1998. We were touched then by his quiet grace, dignity and humility and the strength and determination that he exuded.
He was most likely the most powerful, credible and lasting voice of reason in the 20th and 21st century; an example of courage and selflessness; a fount of practical wisdom to people all over the world; a visionary, an idealist as well as a realist; a true peacemaker.
His life will long remain as a most powerful example of man’s humanity to man.
His legacy will influence the lives not only of people in his native South Africa, but of people all over the world.
Please convey our profoundest sympathy to his beloved spouse, and to his entire family.
Dame Pearlette Louisy
