The National Workers Union (NWU) has written to the Labour Commissioner seeking his intervention in what the Union says is a troubling development at the Coconut Bay Resort in Vieux Fort.
NWU President Tyronne Maynard said over 30 employees have received pink slips. He noted that the union was never engaged by the Resort before the terminations began.
There is speculation that the workers are being retrenched because of their support for union representation. The NWU recently obtained recognition status at Coconut Bay.
Maynard further stated that here was apprehension on the part of the Resort to embrace the workers’ decision but management eventually accepted the outcome.
While noting the right of the company to relieve workers, Maynard said if the Resort is facing financial difficulty, consulting the Union may have presented unexplored options.
Firing workers because of financial strain, the unionist said, isn’t always the best and only answer to the problem.
The labour commissioner has indicated that a full investigation into the matter will be launched.
