Labour Commissioner rules on WASCO/NWU Length of Service Premium Industrial impasse

rubis-and-national-workers-unionPRESS RELEASE – Labour Commissioner, Mr. Ray Narcisse has settled the Length of Service Premium industrial impasse between the Management of the Water and Sewerage Company Incorporated (WASCO Inc.) and the National Workers Union (NWU).

Some two (2) weeks ago the National Workers Union served a thirty (30) day notice of intended industrial action on Labour Minister, Hon. Robert K. Lewis on behalf of fortnightly paid workers employed with the Water and Sewerage Company. The industrial impasse was centred around the implementation of a Length of Service Premium of one dollar ($1.00) per hour on the wages of workers who had completed twelve (12) years of service with WASCO.

A meeting at conciliation level was summoned by the Labour Commissioner during which representatives of WASCO and the NWU made their presentation. The NWU held strongly to the view that the manner in which the company had implemented the Length of Service Premium was wrong and that the workers were due for retroactive compensation. The Commissioner gave both sides the undertaking that he would give a ruling on the matter subsequently.

In a letter dated December 08, 2015 addressed to Mr. Vincent Hippolyte, WASCO’s Managing Director and copied to the NWU the Commissioner conveyed that workers should be paid their Length of Service Premium of one dollar ($1.00) per hour on their vacation pay.

The NWU will withdraw the notice of intended industrial action and looks forward to an early settlement of current industrial negotiations.
