King still bats for UWP, says economy was better under his leadership and under UWP

Political pundits made many speculations when Castries North Member of Parliament Stephenson King was voted out of the leadership of the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) and replaced as leader of the Opposition.

Some even speculated that the former prime minister would break away from the UWP and form a new party, or run as an independent candidate in the next general elections – more so when it was revealed that there was a row between King and the new Allen Chastanet-led executive.

But those insinuations were somewhat discarded on Thursday evening when King told a TV reporter at a political rally in Gros Islet that he remains a member of the UWP.

“Obviously, the public must be curious. The fact is I have consistently indicated to the public, whenever I have the opportunity, to say that I continue to be a member of the United Workers Party. I continued to subscribe to the philosophy of the United Workers Party and therefore no one should read into my absence of meetings, public or otherwise,” he told HTS News Force.

During his presentation at the rally, King bashed the ruling St. Lucia Labour Party’s performance, saying the economy was much better when he was prime minister.

“We do know that there are countries who are struggling,” he told supporters. “… but for you my friends who knew what it was four years ago under my leadership, under the administration of the United Workers Party, I am sure you would conclude that despite all of the challenges, all of the challenges that your government, your United Workers Party government were called upon to face, that we performed regardless of the situation.”

The political rally was attended by Gros Islet Member of Parliament Lenard ‘Spider’ Montoute, Opposition Leader Dr. Gale Rigobert, former Attorney General Lorenzo ‘Doddy’ Francis, Dr. Keith Mondesir, among other party executives.

Party Leader Allen Chastanet was not present.

  1. We in Micoud North are a forgiving people, but before we do, King must apologize to us for, the disrespect that he displayed towards us, and more so, the disaster that he created with Jeannine!
He was warned, but he did not think that anything
    we said mattered.

  3. It is obvious to all us who rationally apply our minds to the state of the UWP that it is a fractured party. One can readily see a King (who some say is weak as a leader) camp and the Chastanet (whi is described as strong but arrogant) camp. Some one between these two extremes would have been welcomed. As it stands these two camps while tearing each other apart will tear the party apart in the process. Imagine a divided party governing st lucia!

    • Stephenson King should make way for a younger and more apealing group of individuals. He has done all he could as a career politician. Now its time to end that dependence on the tax payers of the country. Open a business, get a life.

  6. I will loose with Chastanet everyday than to win with King and his team. I want him to come and tell Vieux Fortians about the Balambouche and St Jude Housing Project. The Contractors were already in St Lucia ready to work. The 2011 election lost was Divine intervention in order to get rid of these idiots

  7. I agree. The meeting was to educate the people about the Lambirds saga. Spider did a good job of explaining Emma's unethical role in the matter. At the end of the day, Gros Islet people, is that the kind of candidate you all want to represent you all? Spider is committed to the Gros Islet people and we will vote him in to continue the good work he started. When Spider was there every young man and woman was employed and making a gaining a bread. Now we are suffering... we need him back!

  8. wey boy! U have to admire politicians and how confidently they will speak on subjects they know little of.

A lucian politician is an authority on government, economics, medicine, chemistry, nuclear engineering and genetics. He will generally seek to pass on his wide and varied knowledge on all subjects to his populace Who will drink it all with open mouths like zombies. If he tells us the the sky is purple, then certainly it must be true and our eyes must be the ones lying so lets remove them and blindly follow our almighty leaders.

    Lucians wake up.

  9. The meeting was to inform us in g islet about the Lambairds affair and what part our district rep had to play in it. Must say i learned alot. Dates were given. It was not done in the house where it cannot be challenged. Wonder if Emma can rebuff what Spider said. If Spider does not win it only means more hardship and no representation for us young people in Gros Islet.

    • Well dont count on that cause he no longer has my vote. My vote goes to this very bright young man from the LPM. I beleive he has what it takes to represent Gros Islet.

  11. Am I the only one who read the article? What the article speaks of and the comments posted are totally unrelated. It makes it more understandable as to why the students cannot do well in reading and comprehension sections of their tests.
On another note, King has made an allegation, those who feels it knows it. Are St. Lucuans living the better days? If that is the case then King is wrong. If we are sucking salt and crying out for help then King is right.

    • Go and ask King why was he in the bosom of Kenny Anthony since losing the leadership of the UWP. How do you undermine your party for the last two years in showering praises on Kenny and suddenly join forces with Mr. Montoute to undermine Mr Chastanet.
Its time that the bad boys of the uwp from 2006-2011 bow out gracefully.
Who wants another govermnent headed by King where every man felt he was a mini prime minister. With no discipline when in government and now out of government you expect us to see gang as a viable alternative?

  12. 'ft' its obvious that you were just passing through on Thursday night during the Spider meeting. The meeting was not a national meeting. There was a big crowd, and the speakers were excellent. King and Spider are poised to challenge the seat for their respective constituencies. Spider and King have done a magnificent job representing their constituencies. They deserve the opportunity to continue their work. Who the hell is Chastenet to come and try to get rid of all the people who have contributed to bringing the UWP back on its feet. Where the hell was he when all this was going on? Hope they kick his ass out soon. The party deserves better! One thing Lucians must be mindful is that Chastenet cannot lead nor enable the UWP to win this general elections. When Chanstenet destroys the party and cause a loss, it will not affect him because his bread is well buttered. The other candidates will suffer the consequences cause they have nothing to return too. So think before you all act!!

    • Stop talking shat. If the only change you desire is to impose dead heads on the people election after elections them you better think again. Those of us who were present know that the crowd wasnt Impressive. You must stop the misinfornation to people who were not present. Spider can never win the an election in Gros Islet again. Don't take my word for it. Go ask arounf.

    • Its not about Allen Chastanet or the other Members of the UWP having nothing to go back to it is about the The people of St-lucia and development of Helen GET IT RIGHT GET IT RIGHT GET IT RIGHT BEFORE YALL GO MAKING THESE STATEMENTS AND LOOK LIKE FOOLS

      • No party runs without rules and this is what your section of the UWP wants. You want to do as you please and expect the rest of us and the country won't see through you all. Trying to hold the party hostage to allow the likes of Mondesir and Spider etc as candidates is a one side democracy. Its not good any party and not good for the country either. Haven't we endured enough of the nonsense before?

      • I agree, they are only for themselves, not the people of st.lucia. king had the chance to speak in the house but what he did kept shut. Look gas go up.

  13. King,Spider, Mondesir and Doddy etc paca hont???
You are a bunch of spent and outdated politicians with no new ideas for St Lucias development.
Allen may not have all the ideas but at least he has a goal to make UWP much better. i am tired of this bunch playing their lost cause political ambitions in our face. SPIDER should consider runing on his farm casue that's the only plqce he is able to represent.
Sacway son hont, Old Mcdonald had a farm.

  16. King, Spider et all are all a bunch of jokers. Ask them how successful their meeting was in Gros Islet. A handful of people present and puff it Suddenly dawn on Spider that the thrill is all over.
At the end of the night Chas was still king of the UWP, and King and company little boys believing their hold any relevance. Give it up fellas you are yesterday's news!
