JAMAICA OBSERVER – A statement made by the St Lucia Government that Jamaica is among countries from which recruits for the Islamic State (IS) group have departed, yesterday angered Observer Facebook fans, leaving many asking for proof.

St Lucia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Alva Baptiste was defending his country when he said foreign fighters have gone to Syria from Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, and Suriname and Venezuela in South America.

However, Observer Facebook fans denied that their countrymen would leave the island to join foreign terrorist groups and demanded that Baptiste provide evidence to substantiate his claim.

“Jamaican???no sa. To how we fraid fi dead. Not even fi a million virgin,” one user commented on the article.

“Does this Mr Baptise have PROOF that JAMAICANS are there fighting… MR MINISTER OF SECURITY YU NEED FI SETTLE THIS, AND LIKE …….NOW !” another demanded.

Other comments include:

“I said already and I’m going to say it again we Jamaican can’t join ISIS bcz we late fi everything if the place fi bomb up 7 am all 9 o clock wi just a left wi yard!”

“Jamaicans might licky licky but nu so….. Dnt believe that one bit…”

“As bad as things may be Jamaicans are not so stupid to be involve with ISIS. Until I see proof then I am gonna defend my country. We get too much bad name.”

Baptiste made his statement after Marine General John F Kelly, chief of the Miami-based US Southern Command, known as SOUTHCOM, told the US Senate Armed Services Committee on March 12 that about 100 people have joined the militant group from the region. The report listed Jamaica as one of several countries in the Region from which recruits have departed for Syria.

In regards to this, other fans called on the Government to provide a response.

“I would seriously ask my Govt to please clarify this. How? The same way that they can be making such accusations, they must be able to prove it without a shadow of a doubt,” a Facebook fan commented.

Another expressed: “I am amazed by this article, what proof does this general have to justify his statement and this St Lucian man (Baptiste) labbering his mouth, where is his proof? I am further shocked by our leaders silence. Where is the minister of foreign affairs r whoever? So madam Portia u can’t ask the relevant questions here?”

“Jamaican authorities should have ask the US to provide the identities of the Jamaicans who they claimed to be ISIS. If the US can’t substantiate their claim then that organisation or person who made the claim should be sued,” another said.

However, the Security Ministry said in a release on March 14 that it has been monitoring the emerging situation with respect to the recruiting efforts of terrorist groups and there is no information of any Jamaican being involved.

“To date, we have not received any information to indicate that Jamaicans have departed our shores to join terrorist groups” the release added.

The ministry went on to clarify the statement saying: “The fact is that, the actual prepared text of the speech delivered by General Kelly did not name Jamaica, and as such it is possible that the reported comment may be the result of a misunderstanding. As soon as that situation has been clarified an update will be provided.”

An update is yet to be provided.

  8. GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE!!...READ!!...READ!!!..Stop damning the man!!...Minister Baptiste never mentioned any Caribbean island. Stop making a fool out of you'll selves. He was responding to an article by the US where they said Jamaica and Trinidad sent people to ISIS and he stated clearly that St. Lucia was not part of that. So you telling me, for defending his country, he has to be abused like that? Now I understand why we are one before the last....we are too damn ignorant!!

  9. He could have excused saint lucia without referencing other caribbean islands, that is like finger pointing which we are all aware of the repercussions of this type of behaviour, but yet again its all we are use to hearing on political platforms so im afraid he doesnt know any better

    • He didn't reference any other islands based on the quote taken from him in the article.

“St Lucia’s image has in no way been compromised because no St Lucian is involved”

  12. Their beef should have been with the US general who is the source of the allegation. The St. Lucian tree must be easier to climb.

  13. WHAT ALVA SHOULD HAVE SAID IS THAT HE IS SURE THAT NO ONE FROM LABORIE HAS JOINED ISIS.

VERBOSITY MAY HAVE CAUSED HIM TO PUT HIS FOOT IN HIS MOUTH ON THIS OCCASION.

  17. Typical labour party politicians aiming to destroy others reputation in order that theirs don't look so bad. On day surely they will find that they backed up the wrong tree. Kenny already find himself in hot water with the US and have to prove certain allegations that he made. Thats why he has used IMPACS and now tells everyone else to shut up about it. Long time i have said that it is not the passive people of this country that will expose them it will be people from outside. I guess wearing a red shirt is supossed to be a licence to say anything in the caribbean. Watch and learn

    • All he said was “St Lucia’s image has in no way been compromised because no St Lucian is involved”

In no way is this him destroying others reputation.

    • He feel he could talk the same sh.. he does when he in Lucia. Feel he could talk crap in lucia and make lucians eat it as facts just like his PM does, and now thought he could do that same shate on an international stage and not be called out. That jack..just embarrassed the whole damn country, and soured relations within the region while simultaneously further compromising the credibility of an already corrupt government - PM's words.

      • Should he have said that St.Lucians are part of ISIS?

Because All he said is that St. Lucians are not. This is the only thing quoted from his statement.

  21. Based on the Article this is what Alva said:

“St Lucia’s image has in no way been compromised because no St Lucian is involved”

This statement was made in response to a US General who said:

"small Caribbean nations – such as Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname – as well as Venezuela are concerned about the militants returning home to conduct terror operations because they don't have the ability to deal with the problem."

Based on what was said by Alva I don't see him pointing at any particular country. All he was saying id that St. Lucia is not involved in that.

Similarly if someone said "Paul, John, Timothy and other people from Castries are thieves." If you are from Castries you would say "I am not a thief"

This doesn't mean you are saying the others are thieves but you are excusing yourself from that statement.

He is right to stand up for his people. Yes he has no real evidence that St. Lucians are not involved. However its commendable that he has stood up for us. Similar situation to a parent defending their child who was reportedly in a group of thieves. The parent would say not my child, even though the parent may not have anything definitive to base that statement on.
